Why Your Contractor Isn’t Building You a Healthy Home
There’s a massive disconnect in this industry. You’ve got architects, builders, tradesmen, energy raters, compliance testers, inspectors—and then the homeowner. The homeowner is the one who places all their faith in this circus of people, systems, and processes, believing it’ll all come together to deliver the healthiest, best home for their family.
But here’s the truth: it doesn’t. The fallacy lies in the disconnect. None of these players actually care about the home’s final state of wellness—whether it promotes health or sickness. Their job stops at checking the next box.
The builder, supposedly the conductor of this symphony, is usually the most ignorant of all. Most paid a few hundred bucks, passed a test, and suddenly think they’re qualified to oversee a complex, high-stakes process. Then they lean on “professional subs” who are just as happy to get in and get out as fast as possible.
Homeowners believe they can compare contractors like they compare cars, boats, or any other manufactured product. That’s the biggest mistake. Construction isn’t a factory. It’s the field. And in the real world, ex*****on—not paperwork, not brochures—decides whether a house becomes healthy and durable or a liability.
Yesterday, I walked an 1800’s gut renovation with a potential client. I was trying to impress on her the critical role of water and moisture control. But she had already heard plenty of contractors, friends, and “clean energy” consultants telling her she could just do this or that. She came from the energy-efficiency side of construction—so disconnected from the practical realities it’s scary.
She told me, “Well, if I get you or a 3rd party to design the system, I can get anyone to install it and be good to go.”
Wrong. Dead wrong. That’s the disconnect in a single sentence.
Anyone can hack together an HVAC system that blows hot and cold air. It doesn’t take following code, manufacturer instructions, or best practices to do that. In fact, I could slap a system in faster and cheaper than anyone and still make it “work.” That’s the scam of this industry—it’s built to reward cutting corners.
But I refuse to play that game. I’ve lived with the consequences of bad installs. I’ve seen the sickness, the mold, the ruined homes. I won’t do cheap, I won’t cut corners, and yes—I’ll be the most expensive HVAC contractor you talk to. Guaranteed.
And there’s a damn good reason for that. Because I’m not here to play the “apples-to-apples” game. I’ll design and build you a home—and a mechanical system—that guarantees moisture control, superior filtration, and true ventilation. A home that supports health and wellness, not sickness and disease.
