These bright and showy flower heads are visually attractive and are of interest to small pollinators, especially bees, who are its main pollinators. The foliage serves as a host for Ceraunus blue butterflies and possibly other butterflies that use a variety of legumes. Yellow Puff is sometimes grown as a forage for livestock.

It can be found growing wild in dry, rocky sites of prairies, open woodlands and disturbed soils of roadsides in moderately to well-drained sand, loam and clay. Its extensive root system is highly effective at preventing soil erosion, making it invaluable for stabilizing banks, slopes, and other erosion-prone areas. It forms a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, enriching the soil with nitrogen, thereby boosting fertility and improving conditions for other plants. This plant is a wonderful ground cover and flourishes in full sunlight but can also tolerate partial shade. While generally hardy and adaptable, optimal growth occurs in areas receiving ample sunlight. Furthermore it is very low maintenance!

π₯³Fun fact: Just like its distant relative and maybe more familiar plant, sensitive mimosa (Mimosa pudica), the leaves of Yellow Puff are βthigmonastic,β meaning they physically respond to touch, vibration, or sudden heat. They may also close at night and during periods of cloudy weather. This behavior is thought to serve as a defense mechanism β startling or deterring herbivores, reducing the plantβs exposed surface area to conserve water, or making the plant appear less appealing.
