Another Avery Park customer just called. Badly vibrating unit. I recommend if you have any ice on the fan blades or the grill cover protecting your outside fan that you turn off the heat pump condenser either by putting in emergency heat mode or by the breaker for the outside unit. If you cannot find an emergency heat setting then your thermostat may be off 2?to 3 degrees in other words, you may have to set it up a couple of degrees to get the heat strips running. Just trying to save you a fan blade, fan motor. Or worse. If there is no ice then running in heat pump mode is ok. I am running mine in heat pump mode today. It is 36 degrees at the moment outside and mine is keeping up without aux heat.

With the weather bringing extreme (for our area) low temperatures and wind chills, some important notes; Our heat pump systems in New Braunfels are not sized for these temperatures, especially for several days. The homes may struggle keeping the temperatuere up. If we get the mixed precipitation expected, then the outside systems will be affected severely, up to and including the point where the defrost cycle won't keep up, the ice that may form could cause damage to the fan motor and fan blade as it hits the growing ice, and if you have certain zone board, the emergency heat cycle may be controlled or turned off by the zone board. I got some of these from a friend who is another contractor in our area and is great advice.
Change your filter.
On Friday or Saturday, raise the temperature in your home 2 to 4 degrees. This will not only warm up the air, but will warm everything in your home, giving you a little grace as the temperatures fall outside.
Take your thermostats off setback or programmable mode and place them to hold.
Keep your garage doors closed as much as possible and limit the traffic into and out of your home.
Make sure all return vents are not obstructed or blocked.
Unhook water hoses and install hose bib covers on them.
As the temperature drops, have a very slow drip both hot and cold on your sinks.
Do not use your stove or oven to heat your home, but cook soups, chilis, etc. This will introduce needed humidity into your home.
If Ice starts growing on your condenser fan shroud, and it gets near the blade, shut down the outside unit and set the system into emergency heat.
