Fiberglass pool construction requires a lot of attention to detail.

We drill holes in the edge of the fiberglass pool wall before concrete is poured. We do so because the manufacturer recommends it to allow air to escape when concrete is poured and wraps underneath the pool edge.

It is also recommended so that rebar can be passed down through the hole to reinforce the concrete that wraps underneath the edge.

When things go off track, as literally happened while backfilling around one of our current pool builds, we had to act fast to get the job done. Setbacks happen, even outright problems happen during construction, so you have to be of the mindset to remain calm, rely on your experience and resources, and find creative solutions.

In this case, we didn't have to come up with some crazy solution. We just called our equipment supplier for this job, who came in clutch delivering a different piece of equipment within about two hours of the track falling off. We then got back to work and wrapped up the backfill.

Shoutout to Apex Equipment Rentals. They even came and picked up the equipment because we were rushing to get out of town, and they wanted to do that for us since we didn't have time to get the equipment back to the yard after the delay, not to mention that the track had to be put back on.

Plaster day is exciting for every new pool owner because not only do they get to see the pool finish they selected for their pool, but it is also the day that we start filling the swimming pool.

The plaster for this job has an additive mixed in that is called quartz mixed in. Quartz is a hard stone that is crushed into small pieces for this application, serving two purposes. It hardens the plaster product, making it more durable, and adds to the design aesthetic.

The customer chose white plaster with white quartz, which is a classic swimming pool plaster color. The white plaster with quartz produces the most beautiful, icy-blue water that looks so refreshing and inviting.

Another benefit of white plaster is that the pool owner does not need to worry about mottling, which is a common condition in colored concrete products that is not considered a defect. Some people hate the mottling effect of colored concrete because they think it looks blotchy. Others think it looks beautiful because it is more antique-looking.

We recently started this project. Fiberglass pool projects move fast. It was delivered on Thursday and will have water in the pool this Thursday, and be completely full by Friday.

There was a large audience when we lifted the pool over the house and into the backyard. Neighbors watched the entire crane set up. There were even neighbors who pulled out the camp chairs so they could watch every second. It is quite the spectacle because it's something most people have never seen - a massive pool picked up, lifted probably 100 ft in the air, expertly moved over the house, and then set in place. Most don't see this last step because the pool is set in the backyard.

There will still be work to do before it is complete, but it is moving along nicely. The homeowner is thrilled with the progress and how the pool looks.

Many swimming pools were built with a single main drain, the drain most commonly at the bottom of the pool. The code has changed over the years, so builders are required to convert single-drain pools to dual drains, or implement other suitable solutions to avoid entrapment. The rule governing the installation and upgrading of these drains is called the Virginia Graham Baker Act.

We were recently hired to replace a vinyl liner. The pool was built with a single main drain, so we had to remove the concrete around the drain, convert the main drain to a dual-drain, then replace the concrete before installing the new vinyl liner.

Now the pool has main drain plumbing in compliance with current safety standards. The homeowner is preparing to sell his home and plans to highlight that he has upgraded the pool.

Responsible construction matters. Rather than looking the other way, we converted the drain. Safety matters. Building codes matter.

We used BarCal Electric for the electrical portion of this project. They always do such great work and are fun to work with. Aric is a pro in every sense of the word. BarCal Electric is a real asset to Enhanced Pools.

The electrical for this job consisted of two Pentair MicroBrite lights, an automatic pool cover with a motor and a switch, the pool equipment consisting of a pump and a heater, and also bonding the pool system.

Do you see the large white pipe sticking up in the air like a snorkel for the swimming pool? It stands out now, but it won't be noticeable once the pool is done, since we will cut it and place a skimmer lid over it.

What is it? That white pipe is called a sump pipe. It is a best practice for fiberglass swimming pools to add it. It sits on the floor, or deeper, in the deepest part of the swimming pool.

The purpose is to protect the swimming pool in the event it needs to be drained. Any swimming pool, whether made of concrete, fiberglass, or vinyl, is subject to hydrostatic pressure, the pressure exerted by groundwater. When there is sufficient groundwater, the pressure can literally lift the pool out of the ground. Pools are most at risk when they are drained for a repair.

The sump pipe helps mitigate risk in the event the pool needs to be drained. While it is not common for a fiberglass pool to need draining, it may be needed on occasion. In these cases, one could look down the sump pipe to check for water and, if present, pump it out before draining the pool, effectively minimizing the risk.

The sump pipe is a must-do when building a fiberglass swimming pool.

Straight walls and level fiberglass pools result from expert supervision that holds subs and employees to high standards. The biggest mistakes in swimming pool construction result from a lack of supervision.

Attention to detail and a commitment to pursuing the best results, even when challenges arise and are inconvenient, can be difficult, but they are worthwhile for both the pool builder and the customer.

We have been called by pool owners in the Treasure Valley whose pools were significantly out of level. Obviously, the manager or supervisor of the employees or subs failed to check the level of the pool.

We have also seen pools that were significantly bowed inward or outward, resulting from rushing the process, adding backfill around the pool too quickly, or adding too much water without enough backfill.

Quality matters. Supervision matters. Attention to detail matters.

An expert excavator is important for the construction of a concrete swimming pool. Seemingly little things make a huge difference.

When setting the form, we use 2x6 boards so that the top of the bond beam is thick enough to be protected against damage from freezing temperatures.

I have heard people over the years express frustration that their pool builder did not build a pool as deep as they had planned. The most common reason is that the builder plans the pool depth from the top of their forms, which approximates the top of the tile. The waterline is normally 3" below the top of the tile, so 3" needs to be added to the excavation to ensure it finishes at the planned water depth. I realize that some will consider this a small difference, but to some people it matters.

Other things to consider when planning excavation depths include the amount of fall (or slope) from an existing patio, the thickness of the deck material, and the thickness of the swimming pool floor.
