🌊 Salt System vs UV System – Which is better for your pool?
Here’s the honest breakdown:
Saltwater Chlorine Generator (Salt System)
âś… Produces chlorine automatically from salt added to the water
✅ Softer, silkier water with less “chlorine smell” and eye irritation
✅ Lower day-to-day chemical handling – just keep salt levels right
âś… Very popular for families who want easy maintenance
⚠️ Can slowly raise pH and calcium levels (needs more monitoring in climate)
⚠️ Salt can be mildly corrosive to some equipment and stonework over many years
⚠️ Salt cell usually needs cleaning/replacing every 3–7 years
UV System
âś… Uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses, and algae instantly as water passes through
âś… Allows you to run much lower chlorine levels (often 50% less)
âś… Excellent water clarity and reduces chloramines (that strong chlorine odor)
âś… Gentler on your pool equipment and gel coat long-term
⚠️ Still requires some residual chlorine or another sanitizer (UV is a secondary system)
⚠️ UV bulb needs replacement every 2–4 years
Our Recommendation:
Many of our clients love a Salt System for convenience, while others prefer UV (or UV + low chlorine) for the cleanest possible water and less impact on their beautiful fiberglass pool finish.
The best choice depends on your family’s sensitivity to chemicals, how much maintenance you want, and your budget.
