What do you do to deter birds from nesting in very inconvenient spots? You build some custom boxes to match the existing 100+ year old porch structure! After trying all sorts of deterrents and other attempts to fill the space, Kate reached out to me to build some permanent boxes to match the existing structure. Had some fun making the internal support framing very beefy, and scribed & coped the trim boards to fit nicely. And I was also thankful that my beast of a miter saw literally pulled its weight in being able to cut down a 1x12 board to make three boxes for the three columns. Now Kate & Joe can enjoy their very lovely front porch without bird p**p and screaming birds everywhere!!! **p

Got to enjoy the Mexican War Streets Society House Tour today courtesy of winning free tickets from Miranda Pittsburgh Realtor | Miranda Micire !!! First time going to this one, so it was soo cool getting to see the insides of some of these neat old houses! Thank you Angie for joining me too! Lots of fun inspiration and lots of old woodwork and tile to drool over! Thank you to all the lovely homeowners who opened their doors to everyone too! Can I use more exclamation points?! 😆

Just because I got a fresh ‘do AND doing one of my favorite things today! Thank you Kirsten for lopping 8+” off my hair today! And working with freshly sanded solid walnut + stain & finish samples = chef’s kiss! 👩🏻‍🍳🤌🏼

I was researching weatherstripping for old windows and doors for a client, and was so tickled to find out our own original stained glass windows have ALL the interlocking metal weatherstripping intact!! (behind fixed external storms now). And our front door has an interlocking brass threshold too. I had seen these weird little lips on the bottom of old doors but didn’t know why until today! This makes me so happy to have real world examples to see and touch now that I’ve learned about these things from The Craftsman Blog, Heritage Supply Co, and Wm. A. Kilian Hardware Co.

Yay for finally meeting Sam in person and getting to chat about both woodworking AND running things!

Finished my parts in this home gym makeover today! This included:
✅ removal of old ceiling fans, ceiling hooks, and crown moulding trim
✅ repair & reinforce loose section of ceiling plaster
✅ glue loose bricks along top edge of wall back into place
✅ fill large gaps between ceiling & tops of walls with wood & great stuff
✅ add furring strips to ceiling to anchor panels to and allow electrical wires to run between LED light tracks
✅ install WOODYWALLS | Wood Wall Panels fluted ash wood panels on the ceiling
✅ rip up old glue down outdoor carpet (which was accompanied by lots of bad words, blisters and a bucket of sweat)
✅ use three different types of adhesive removers to try and remove as much carpet glue as possible (none of which were particularly good at doing so though)
✅ install new interlocking rubber gym flooring
✅ install wall shelves & hooks

Helped a neighbor with a quick wall fix! A contractor had removed a long strip of drywall from their kitchen wall to see what utilities might be in it, and after almost two years of looking at it they had enough and tried to do a DIY fix. It wasn’t going to be as smooth and seamless as they wanted, so I got the text and had a couple of hours free to help them out. Took out the old phone line jack and that ugly wire conduit while we were at it too. And now it’s up to them as to what color they wind up painting it - try to match it vs. paint the whole room.

Got to throw my weight around at work… quite literally 😆 I had to rip up about 170 sq ft of glue down outdoor carpet last week. It was a complete PITA (and back and hands) but got ‘er done. Glad I do a bootcamp class 2x/week at Mecka Fitness Mecka Fitness to stay strong to be able to do this job and do things like wrestle ceiling panels up high and rip carpet off of concrete!

I’m going with the red team ❤️ Milwaukee Tool
I’ve been using the Ryobi tools that we bought 9 years ago when we moved to PGH just as a basic toolkit for our periodic DIY projects. I figured when one of my now well used tools died I’d take the chance to upgrade. That day came last week when my multitool/whizzy/oscillating saw decided to give up the ghost. My hubby is training to be a volunteer fireman and he was like “well most of the tools we have are Milwaukee, so if that’s what the firemen trust, then go for those.” (And I have a fair number of other red tools & toolbags & toolboxes)
Don’t come at me you black and gold fans, I’m not a native PGH’er. 😆
