Drywall Repair tip: Double-check your outside spigots before this weekend. We've all probably been hearing about the major cold front moving our way. We've had a relatively easy winter so far, but it wouldn't hurt to take a few minutes to make sure the outside spigots are covered for the winter, and the inside valves are turned off. A little prevention goes a long way!

Water Damage Restoration: One of the main things we do in the winter here at The Master's Finish is drywall repair for walls and ceilings that get damaged by water, many times from frozen pipes. And the sad reality is that many of these pipes never would have frozen and done damage if just a little more care & attention had been paid by those working around the pipes. Sometimes it's the insulator who didn't fasten the insulation well enough to the framing, and then a major arctic blast comes through and knocks this whole piece down off the attic ceiling. This then creates somewhat of a wind tunnel effect and amplifies the cold effect right onto the pipes. And then there are the other tradespeople that come in after a perfect insulating job, and they push the insulation out of the way to re-work their plumbing or electrical or HVAC issue - and forget to put the insulation back in place! The drywall is installed, and no one ever knows there's a problem until it's too late. A little caring goes a long way. This is also true when putting things back together after the flooding. New insulating work needs to be extra thorough now because a vulnerable area has surfaced. If there was a little piece of R-13, let's double the pieces if there is room. If there are some gaps and cracks to the exterior, let's use some spray foam to seal everything up extra well. Let's treat my customer's house like I would treat my own. Settlement Crack Drywall Repair Mount Airy Md: Serious Problem?
Do the settlement cracks on your ceiling or walls mean you have a more serious problem than a cosmetic drywall issue? My experience says that generally ceiling settlement cracks are from sheetrock coming a little loose from the framing at the point of the seams. Just a 1/8 inch loosening can cause the cracking to appear in the seam. The earthquakes we experienced half a dozen years ago could have moved things enough to bring on cracking. Many times the culprit can be framing lumber not completely dried in the original framing process, so that once it dries it takes the drywall screws with it and causes a slight separation between the drywall and framing. There are also times when the drywall wasn't quite thoroughly fastened from the very beginning. All of the seams get quickly taped and mudded, and things can look fine for a year or two, then a little stress hits the home (like a wind-shear or minor ground tremor), enough to shake the house a little, and those weak points are revealed. Custom Painting: To Tape or Not to Tape? We all know the frustration of trying to paint a crisp line where the wall color meets the ceiling or base trim, but our brush is too wide or fat to help us. In this case I would encourage using blue painter's tape in the ceiling or trim so that you can achieve a good line. If you have a brush with a fine tip you can oftentimes lightly set the tip right up in the crease of the ceiling & wall corner and create the nice color line. If you choose to go the tape route, be careful setting the tape. The corner angle where walls and ceilings meet tend to have a lot of fluctuation to them. You also need to watch out for paint bleeding behind the tape. Overall, I think taping is a good idea, but it also has limitations and takes some good practice to achieve a good result. Drywall Patching: Hint for Ceiling Drywall Patching - It seems that many ceiling patches from water damage occur near the outside walls of a house. One thing often overlooked is the insulation when you're replacing the sheetrock. Once you have your ceiling opened, take a minute to look at each bay of insulation. If you have the time, go grab a twenty-five dollar roll of insulation and add extra up against that exterior wall - this would be a great investment and possibly insurance against frozen pipes near those walls.
Today's drywall repair work was in New Market MD. We replaced an area of a dining room ceiling sheetrock @ 6 ft x 6 ft. Drywall Patching: Making Your Drywall Trowel Work Right

If you've ever tackled a drywall project, you know it all starts with those drywall TROWELS. But it's terribly frustrating to buy that nice shiny trowel at the store and try to spread the joint compound with it. It is so "scrapy" and hard, and the compound all wants to slide right off of it. And then you watch a video on drywall and those guys just smooth the compound and hold it on their trowel like it's magnetic! What's the difference? A simple help here is to use some sandpaper and work off the edges of your trowel. Try to get the very corners a little rounded. Then sand the "shinyness" on the flat metal parts. Scuff it up really good. All of this will help to hold the compound.

Paint Quality - Don't be fooled!!! I recently painted a Great Room for some wonderful customers in the Ellicott City and Clarksville Md areas. They shopped for just the right wall paint. An expensive paint store sold them on a particular paint, promising that this was just as good as the paint I had recommended, which happened to be a Behr product. But the paint they sold to my customers was very inferior. I would compare it the paints we use from Sherwin for about $ 23 a gallon. The problem was that they paint cost my customers more than $ 50 a gallon! Maybe the take-home message here is that sometimes the painters who use the paints have a fair amount of practical knowledge of paint quality. High Ceiling Settlement Cracks can be repaired to look as good as new! We recently helped two different customers in Clarksville Md repair some major cracking on their cathedral high ceilings. One of the keys is to take the time to refasten the seams at each available contact point with the framing. The second key is to use a strong tape, preferably a vinyl strengthened drywall tape. We aim for a long-lasting fix, so we try to do this all right the first time.
