Planning a new metal building? Before you pour that foundation, let’s talk about a game-changing concrete secret that most people get wrong.

You might think pouring your concrete pad a few inches wider than your building is the way to go. But here is the professional inside scoop: It is actually much better to pour your concrete to the exact size of your building. Why? Enter the "Sheet Notch" (also known as a wrap ledge or drip ledge)! 🌧️🚫

When your slab is poured to the exact dimensions of your metal frame, contractors can create a clever notched edge around the perimeter. This allows your metal siding to hang slightly lower than the top of the concrete slab.

Here is why the Sheet Notch + Exact Size combo is a superpower for your structure:

Waterproof Barrier: Rainwater runs straight down the metal walls and drops off below the floor level, instead of pooling on an extended concrete lip and leaking inside.

Pest Control: It creates a tight, continuous physical seal that stops mice, bugs, and drafts from squeezing under the base rail.

This is easily one of the most common questions we get! The right choice depends on your budget, how you plan to use the space, and local code requirements.

Here’s a quick side-by-side comparison to help you decide:

🔹 Concrete Slab

Best For: Finished workshops, garages, man caves, and heavy machinery/vehicle storage.

Pros: Smooth, easy to sweep/clean, highly stable, prevents moisture/pests, and increases property value.

Cons: Higher upfront cost and requires professional pouring/curing time.

🔸 Gravel Pad

Best For: Agricultural storage, open carports, tractor/equipment sheds, and budget-friendly projects.

Pros: Significantly lower cost, excellent drainage, and fast installation.

Cons: Harder to sweep, can shift over time, and isn't ideal if you plan to enclose and fully finish the interior later.
