Did you know that a tree's roots are usually much wider than its branches?

While many people think tree roots grow deep into the ground, most roots are actually found within the top 18–24 inches of soil where oxygen and moisture are most available. In fact, a tree's root system can extend 2–3 times farther than the edge of its canopy.

That's why construction, trenching, soil compaction, and even repeated vehicle traffic can impact a tree long before you get close to the trunk.

What happens underground is just as important as what you see above ground!

Stumped with a Stump Problem

After a tree is removed, the stump is often left behind, but it can continue to create problems for years to come.

Why Do Tree Roots Lift Sidewalks?

Many people assume tree roots "push" sidewalks upward, but that's only partly the case.

Most tree roots grow within the top 12–24 inches of soil where oxygen and moisture are most available. As these roots increase in diameter over time, they can exert pressure on sidewalks, driveways, and curbs built too close to the tree. The result is lifted, cracked, or uneven concrete.

Not all trees cause the same amount of damage. Tree species, soil conditions, available rooting space, and the location of the sidewalk all play a role in whether root-related issues develop.

When selecting trees for planting, choosing the right species and providing adequate rooting space can help reduce the likelihood of future conflicts between roots and hardscape surfaces.
