Want to know if you're hiring the right roofing contractor? Ask them one question. How are you venting my roof?
If they can't give you a clear answer, they're not the right contractor for the job.
Here's why this matters more than most homeowners realize —
Your attic needs to breathe. When it can't, heat gets trapped. In the summer that trapped heat bakes your shingles from the inside out. In the winter it creates condensation that leads to mold and wood rot on your decking.
Either way your roof fails years before it should. And most homeowners never connect the dots. They think they got a bad roof when they actually got bad ventilation.
There are different ways to vent a roof. Ridge vents along the peak. Box vents on the back slope. Powered attic fans. Each one works differently and the right solution depends on your roof design, your attic size, and your climate.
The method matters less than having a plan.
A good roofing contractor should be able to explain exactly how they're ventilating your attic and why they chose that method for your specific roof. If they're not bringing this up at all, they're just slapping shingles on and moving to the next job.
💡 WHAT TO ASK BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING —
→ What type of ventilation are you installing and why? → How are you handling intake ventilation at the soffits? → Is my current attic ventilation adequate or does it need to be upgraded?
These three questions will tell you everything you need to know about whether your contractor actually understands roofing or just knows how to nail shingles down.
Your roof is only as good as the system underneath it. Ventilation is part of that system.
