Runoff on steep slopes, especially in wooded areas where grass doesn’t grow well, can cause significant damage when not intentionally managed. Upslope diversion swales are used in many applications, and they’re commonly used for septic drainfield protection. These swales had not received maintenance in quite some time leading to runoff eroding portions of the drainfield.

Yes, they can look awkward, but they’re intentional for keeping downslope things protected.

After starting this project we were interrupted by heavy rains and significant flooding in the area. Thankfully, the site remained relatively dry throughout the process.

This project was for a great customer who is building a new home. We installed a 3bedroom ATL, gravity flow septic system with a drain to lower the groundwater.

There is a great misunderstanding of river flooding and how property and infrastructure is impacted by significant water inundation. My hope to is help educate on the topic of river flooding.

Smokey Row Rd at 144 near Prairie Aggregates Waverly location has been largely inaccurately reported. This area is not protected by any certified levee or flood control structure. It is mapped in the floodway as designated by FEMA and regulated by USACE and INDNR. The base flood elevation (BFE) is a published elevation above sea level that FEMA allows for flooding to occur (yes flooding must occur in certain circumstances) along waterways to prevent significant impacts up and downstream. There are engineers, hydrologists, and surveyors who spend a lifetime studying, modeling, and evaluating flooding. These folks publish and regularly certify flood maps to ensure lives and property are as safe as possible.

What has happened across Indiana is unfortunate to watch unfold, and we’re praying for all of those impacted. If you have any questions or would like to know more, comment below.

Lastly, did you know that sand/gravel pits are frequently in floodplains as flooding is what deposited the sand and gravel that we now mine in the first place? These things aren’t a coincidence.

Stay safe!

Recently we helped a customer who was experiencing high water alarm issues in their dosing tank as well as settling soils around their tanks. We were able to replace a failed high water alarm and float and regrade the area around the tanks to promote drainage away from the tanks.

Ditches and drainage swales require maintenance, and in many cases commercial and industrial sites are required by environmental operating permits to conduct maintenance. This open channel ditch feeds a detention pond to manage peak on-site stormwater runoff, and it was lost under years of vegetative growth. After clearing the brush, removing several trees, and excavating the silt…this ditch is ready to manage heavy rainfall once again. This customer requested a heavy woven geotextile to line the ditch.

I’m at a loss for words to describe how far we have come. Many have helped along the way getting us to this point, and we’re grateful for those people. However, we’ve been told that we’re “piddling around”, “you don’t want to do that”, and “that’s too much for you to handle” by some folks. That’s okay, we will continue to piddle and bite off more than we can chew.

This past week we had the opportunity to help a loyal customer who has had a longstanding issue with heavy rain overwhelming their basement sump pump on the opposite side of this wall. Although not a 100% solution…a cost effective, no pump, and low yard impact solution was designed to catch water high in the soil profile and move it by gravity away from the home.

Recently we were able to help a customer with a continual washout of their horse pasture that was discovered after everything was built up. Our only option was to catch the water high and take it underground through the pasture with enough depth to protect it from the hooves above. We ended up finding an existing field tile upstream and tying it into our newly installed drainage.
