(Ouachita Parish) - January 28, 2026 – In the aftermath of recent the winter storm that caused widespread home and property damage throughout Ouachita Parish, residents can expect an increase in contractors and individuals soliciting repair and cleanup services. While many of these businesses are legitimate and reputable, past storm events have shown that some individuals exploit disaster situations, leaving homeowners with unfinished work and financial losses.
The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office encourages all residents to take precautions and verify the legitimacy of any person or company offering home or property repair services before entering into an agreement.
Residents are urged to take the following steps to verify contractors:
• Contact the Ouachita Parish Police Jury at (318) 327-1420 to confirm the contractor has obtained a valid parish occupational license.
• Contact the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) to verify proper state licensing:
o For projects under $7,500: No state license is required; however, a parish occupational license is required.
o For projects over $7,500: A state home improvement license is required.
o For projects over $50,000: A state residential license is required.
The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors can be reached at (225) 765-2301 or online at https://lslbc.gov/weathering-the-storm/. Residents are reminded that even if a contractor presents a paper copy of a license, that license could be suspended or invalid.
“We know from experience that scammers target storm-damaged areas and attempt to exploit residents when they are vulnerable. I want to be absolutely clear: do not hand over money, sign contracts, or allow work to begin until you have verified that the contractor is properly licensed. Anyone who refuses to provide credentials or pressures you for immediate payment should be considered suspicious. A few minutes of verification can save you from becoming a victim,” says Sheriff Marc Mashaw.
Under Louisiana Law 14:202.1, contractor fraud laws can be found at https://law.justia.com/codes/louisiana/revised-statutes/title-14/rs-14-202-1/.
OPSO remains committed to protecting the citizens of Ouachita Parish and encourages anyone who believes they may be the victim of contractor fraud or suspicious activity to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 318-329-1200.
