Most people expect a pest control company to make them wait.

Called on a Friday. On the schedule for Monday.

Found small holes in a sweater you have not worn since last winter?

That is usually carpet beetles, not moths.

Carpet beetle larvae feed on wool, felt, pet hair, and the lint that collects in closet corners. They work slowly and quietly, which is why the damage shows up all at once when you pull the winter clothes out in October. Sunlight and disturbance bother them, so they stay in the back of the closet and under the furniture.

Vacuuming the closet floor and the edges is a real first step, not busywork.

Wiring. Insulation. Ductwork. Stored inventory.

Rodents chew because their teeth never stop growing, so they work on whatever is handy. In a house that usually means the insulation in your attic and the wiring behind an appliance. In a shop or a control building out on a lease, it means the same damage with a much bigger bill attached.

One pair does not stay a pair for long.

Here is what Graham wrote after we came out: "Came out ASAP to handle a mice problem. Technician was very knowledgable and helpful. Very affordable"

Waiting a week usually means more of them, in more places, and in more of your insulation. That is why we try to get rodent calls on the schedule fast instead of putting you in a queue.

Why are there suddenly hundreds of crickets by your front door?

Because your porch light is the brightest thing for a block.

Fall is when West Texas crickets move, and they move toward light. Storefronts, shop bays, warehouse doors, and lit lease sites get the worst of it, but a regular porch light will do it too. They pile up at the door, and every time it opens, some of them come in with you.

Swapping to a warm or yellow bulb makes your door a lot less interesting to them.

The bugs showing up in your house right now are not new.

They are not hatching. They are moving in.

October is when West Texas nights finally drop, and a whole group of insects switches from living outside to looking for a warm place to wait out winter. Stink bugs, beetles, and crickets all do it. They do not chew their way in. They find a gap that is already there, usually around a window frame, a door sweep, or a utility line.

Once they are inside a wall, they go quiet until spring. That is why most people never connect the two.
