Choosing the right windows for your home: A basic understanding.
1. Choose Your Frame Material.
Your climate and home style will determine which frame material is best for your home.
-Vinyl: The most popular choice. It is highly energy-efficient, affordable, and requires virtually zero maintenance.
-Wood: Offers beautiful, traditional aesthetics and superior insulation. However, they are high-maintenance and prone to rotting or warping if not cared for.
-Fiberglass: Highly durable, requires minimal maintenance, and is resistant to extreme weather changes.
-Composite: Combines the strength of materials like fiberglass with the look of real wood. It provides top-tier energy efficiency and exceptional durability.
-Aluminum: Strong and slender, allowing for larger glass panes and wider views. However, it is a poor insulator and is best suited for mild or warm climates.
2. Understand Glass and Energy Efficiency.
The glass package is what truly saves you money on utility bills. Look for these specific ratings:
-Double or Triple Pane: Standard for modern windows. Inert gas (like argon) is often used between the panes for extra insulation.
-Low-E Coating: A microscopic layer that reflects heat, keeps your home warmer in the winter, and protects interior furniture from UV fading.
-U-Factor: Measures how well the window insulates. A lower U-factor indicates better insulation.
-Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): Measures how much sun heat the window lets in. If you live in a hot, sunny climate, you want a lower SHGC.
3. Pick Your Operation Style.
You don’t have to replace your windows with the exact same operating style you currently have.
-Double-Hung & Single-Hung: Classic look with moving sashes. Double-hung allows both the top and bottom sash to tilt inward for easy cleaning.
-Casement: Hinged and opens outward like a door using a crank. They offer excellent ventilation and a tight seal.
-Awning: Hinged at the top and open outward. Great for letting in fresh air while keeping light rain out.
-Slider: Glides horizontally on tracks. Ideal for wide window openings.
-Bay or Bow: Windows that protrude outward from the wall, adding depth to a room and creating extra space.
