This is going to be a really fun project to help make Fruita safer! We are looking forward to collaborating with the City of Fruita and other local businesses to perform some fire mitigation in the Little Salt Wash Park, and the park is going to look better than ever when we are done. Fire mitigation isn’t just rural—it can be right in your hometown backyard.
Starting Monday, May 18, crews will begin a large-scale fuel-reduction project at Little Salt Wash Park. The work is expected to take about two weeks.
This project is a partnership between the Lower Valley Fire District, Two Rivers Wildfire Coalition, the City of Fruita, Black Mule Forestry, and Eco Burn. Crews will be removing invasive tamarisk, elm trees, fallen trees, dry grasses, loose debris, and other vegetation that can become a fire hazard. Aesthetic trees and any trees that are part of the disc golf course will remain in place. Removed materials will be mulched on-site or burned using Eco Burn's clean-burn technology, with the resulting nutrients returned to the soil to support new growth of native trees and grasses across the wash.
No chemicals or herbicides will be used during this project. The mitigation relies entirely on natural processes, which is especially important because Little Salt Wash flows directly into the Colorado River. Keeping the work chemical-free protects the wash, the surrounding habitat, and the river downstream.
The goal is to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildfire resilience, protect nearby homes and natural spaces, and leave Little Salt Wash healthier for the long term.
Visitors to the park can expect to see crews and equipment in the area during this time. Thank you for your patience as we work together to keep our community safer and healthier.
