Taylor has been leading the pool industry for nearly a century. Those who use Taylor test kits, like their 3-Way Kit, see why.

Traditional plaster usually starts showing its age after about 7–10 years here in Idaho. Freeze-thaw cycles, water chemistry, and everyday wear all add up. Then you’re back to draining the pool and paying for another replaster.

AquaBright changes the long-term math. It’s a durable, non-porous finish that’s easier to care for, and it carries the manufacturer’s warranty on top of our own labor warranty. That gives Boise and Meridian homeowners more confidence than simply restarting the plaster cycle every few years.

We’re a locally owned Meridian shop serving Boise, Meridian, and the Treasure Valley. If your finish is wearing out, call (208) 495-5047.

Let’s talk finishes.

“The tile just popped off” is almost never just a tile problem.

On a raised beam, water can wick up through the concrete. If the top and back of that beam aren’t properly waterproofed before stone or tile goes on, moisture can push masonry loose and leave those chalky white efflorescence stains.

The coping and surrounding deck also move at different rates. That’s why the joint between them matters. A flexible expansion joint can help keep deck movement from pushing coping inward and snapping tile.

Then there’s the bond itself. Tile needs appropriate, void-free coverage for the actual substrate. When water gets trapped behind a tile and freezes during a Treasure Valley winter, freeze-thaw stress becomes another factor.

And in a saltwater pool, ordinary adhesive and grout may not be the right choice. Chemically resistant epoxy-modified thinset and grout may be called for, depending on the system and site.

During a remodel, ask what’s happening behind the tile and at the deck joint, not only which tile you like. Waterproofing, jointing, adhesion, and materials are assessment- and site-dependent, not one-size-fits-all fixes.

Pool renovations go smoother when the order is right. First, drain the pool so the shell, plumbing, fittings, and trouble spots can be inspected. Then take care of structural repairs and prep. Tile and coping come before the interior finish because those edges need to be installed, set, and cleaned up before the new surface goes in. Deck work gets planned around that sequence, too. Access, drainage, equipment, and any deck repairs should be coordinated up front, so you’re not tearing up the same deck twice. After the tile, coping, and repairs are complete, the interior finish goes on, then the pool is filled and started up properly. Balanced water is a perk for both pool goers and pool cleaners.

Unbalanced water can lead to wear on the cleaner components and technology.

Idaho’s freeze-thaw cycle is rough on older pool plaster. A hot summer can be followed by hard winter freezes, and all that expansion and contraction puts stress on the surface. Cracks show up. Seams open. Water finds its way where it shouldn’t.

That’s why ecoFinish AquaBright can be worth a closer look during a pool renovation. Its flexible, thermal-sprayed finish handles temperature shifts differently than traditional cement-based plaster. It’s not a magic shield, but it can be a better fit for Idaho’s temperature swings and an easier finish to care for.

Older pool or spa surface slowing down your renovation plans? ecoFinish AquaBright can make the finish side a lot easier.

It cures almost instantly, with no hot start, no acid pour, and no trucked-in water. So you’re not racing to refill the pool. Fill it on your own schedule, when it works for your household.

That gives us more flexibility while planning the rest of the remodel too… plaster, tile, coping, equipment, and the details that make an older pool feel new again. We’ll help you figure out what makes sense for your pool and your backyard.

That ugly line around the pool? It’s not just dirt.

Treasure Valley water is hard, and those minerals can leave calcium and scale baked onto the waterline tile. Brushing usually won’t touch it once it builds up.

Professional tile cleaning uses the right method for the tile and finish, removing the buildup without beating up the surface. It also gives us a better look at what needs repair or replacement.

That’s why waterline tile is one of the first upgrades homeowners consider during a remodel. New tile can freshen up an older pool fast, especially when it’s paired with updated coping, plaster, or an ecoFinish AquaBright finish. It’s clean-looking, durable, and designed to make pool care easier with less chemical demand.

September’s a smart month to look at that older pool or spa before freezing weather hits the Treasure Valley.

If the plaster feels rough, the tile looks dated, or the coping is starting to show its age, now’s a good time to plan the renovation. We can talk through draining the pool, a fresh plaster or ecoFinish AquaBright finish, updated tile, new coping, and the details that make the whole backyard feel newer again. AquaBright gives you a smooth, durable finish that’s easier to care for and supports reduced chemical use.

If you’re closing the pool, wait until the water is around 60 degrees. Balance the water as temperatures drop, including around 40 degrees. Add algae prevention, stain control, and enzymes. Check water levels monthly and add water through the skimmer or under the cover. Remove water from covers when practical. After winterizing, check chlorine periodically and add liquid chlorine if it drops below 1 PPM until the water freezes or winter weather hits.
