Make sure you hire qualified people to work on your home to avoid incomplete jobs, over payment and poor workmanship. Check with past clients and look up their contractor's license # to determine if they are the right contractor for you. Also don't pay the entire bill upfront. I've been to two problem houses this week that could have avoided the difficulties they are facing now by following these steps.

Just cleaned a dryer vent for a family from Germany who moved to Merced for the UC. Very nice people! Now I'm off to hang a ceiling fan and then do a home inspection. Busy Saturday!
