Design starts with listening — to the land, the architecture, and the features that already give a property its soul. At Root, those aren’t just ideas; they’re daily practices. We utilize the landscape, highlight what’s worth celebrating, draw from the architecture, and learn from the land itself.

So what did we do here?
Simple moves with big impact.

We honored a stunning mature Japanese maple by making it the focal point. We rerouted the driveway to feel less like a straight shot and more like a countryside journey. And we shifted materials and layered plantings along the way to create rhythm, softness, and a sense of arrival.

Small decisions, made with intention, can reshape an entire experience.
Good design doesn’t shout — it guides.

Wrapping up our last official day under construction, and it’s hard not to feel proud. This project pushed us, taught us, and gave us memories we’ll carry for a long time. We laughed, we problem‑solved, we showed up for each other — and we finished it as a team.

Huge thanks to Hawthorne Design & Development, BRYAN BROWN ARCHITECTS , fordconsultinggroup , VAL MORANO S. , Matthew Lang , and every subcontractor who stepped foot on the property. This isn’t goodbye — it’s see you next time.

Phase 2 is officially a go! Just approved was this big backyard upgrade.

Phase 1: 300+ plants moved, replanted, and re‑imagined.

Phase 2: new patio spaces featuring a custom pergola and outdoor kitchen coming soon, built by VAL MORANO S.

Renderings today, progress tomorrow. Excited to share the build as it unfolds. Big changes ahead.

Throwing it back to a Hudson River collab that kept us on our toes. This patio makeover started with some seriously unclean fill and a site that did not want to cooperate. But we pushed through, piece by piece, and delivered a warm, functional outdoor escape for this residential building overlooking NYC — complete with a new patio, pergola, multiple BBQ islands, lawn, and layered plantings.
Big shoutout to our friends at Yellow Wagon Landscaping for pulling off a tough install with precision and grit.

Every designer has that project. The unbuilt one. The almost‑there one. The one that still lives rent‑free in our heads long after the emails stop and the direction shifts.

As licensed landscape architects, we’re used to evolution — designs change, priorities move, clients pivot. It’s part of the work, and honestly, part of the fun. But every so often, there’s a concept that stays with you. The one you quietly hope circles back someday.

Here’s to the one that got away last year… and here’s to the possibility that one day we’ll get to bring it to life.

Working with Daniel’s Wood Land on this custom tree house has been nothing short of incredible. Their team brought next‑level creativity, professionalism, and some of the best design ideas we’ve seen. The collaboration shows in every detail — and soon, this one‑of‑a‑kind structure will be taking shape on site.

This nighttime shot captures the refreshed front entrance we designed, brought to life with Yellow Wagon Landscaping’s expert installation of Techo‑Bloc walls and steps. Thoughtful design, skilled partners, and a home that now feels complete.

Four sketches, one big shift.
This Phillipsburg property sits right across from the Delaware River and is wrapped in farmland, but step into the backyard and you’d never guess it. We’re taking a river‑loving family and turning them into a full‑blown pool family — with a covered deck, patio, and gathering spaces designed for the kind of crowds that show up hungry and stay past sunset.

A rural backdrop, a river at the front door, and now a backyard built for large, large gatherings.
