If your tree looks like this, fertilizer is not going to fix it. Don't buy a deep root fertilization or special magic formula of bug killer and fungicide. The problem is right behind the tree. And if you don't take the proper precautions to prevent construction damage, there is no "fixing" it. There are many things that happen during construction that irreversibly damage trees, mainly cut roots, damaged roots, and compacted soil. There is very little that can be done to remedy cut and damaged roots. Soil is difficult to de-compact, but it is possible using air and organic matter. It would be much less expensive and much better for the tree to simply fence off the area and keep equipment out. This is easier said than done. Please consult with a Certified Arborist with construction experience BEFORE construction begins, preferably in the design stage and before anyone even cuts the underbrush.
