a detailed visual breakdown of rain gardens (also known as bioretention cells or bioswales), which are sustainable infrastructure features designed to manage stormwater runoff.
The image is divided into two sections, both illustrating how these systems capture, filter, and divert rainwater to prevent flooding and pollution.

1. THE TOP SECTION: ANATOMY OF A DOMESTIC RAIN GARDEN
The first illustration shows a cross-section of a garden typically found in a residential or park setting.
• Surface Vegetation: It features a variety of native plants (like Coneflowers and Black-eyed Susans). These plants are chosen for their deep root systems, which help soak up water and stabilize the soil.
• The Basin: The garden is shaped like a shallow bowl to collect water during a rain event, allowing it to pool temporarily rather than running off into the street.
• Soil and Filtration: Beneath the surface is a layer of dark, organic soil that acts as a natural filter for pollutants.
• Drainage Layer: Below the soil is a bed of gravel or crushed stone. This layer provides extra storage capacity for water and houses a perforated pipe (underdrain). This pipe carries excess filtered water away once the soil is saturated, preventing the garden from becoming a swamp.

2. THE BOTTOM SECTION: URBAN BIO-RETENTION SWALE
The second illustration shows how this technology is scaled up for urban environments, specifically between a road and a sidewalk.

KEY COMPONENTS:
• Curb Notches: These are gaps in the concrete curb that allow rainwater from the asphalt road to flow directly into the garden.
• Bio-Retention Soil: A specialized mix of sand, soil, and organic matter designed for high infiltration rates.
• Mulch Layer: A top layer that keeps the soil moist, prevents erosion, and helps trap heavy metals or oils from the road.
• Gravel Base & Perforated Pipe: Similar to the top diagram, these layers ensure that even during heavy storms, the water is filtered through the earth before entering the municipal drainage system.

WHY THIS MATTERS
Both drawings highlight the shift from "grey infrastructure" (pipes that just dump water into rivers) to "green infrastructure." By using these designs, cities can:
• Reduce Flash Flooding: By slowing down the flow of water.
• Improve Water Quality: By filtering out road grime, salt, and chemicals.
• Enhance Aesthetics: Turning drainage areas into attractive green spaces for pedestrians.
