Be on the lookout for the possible arrival of a destructive, invasive insect in Wisconsin this summer: the Asian longhorned beetle.
While the Asian longhorned beetle has not yet been found in Wisconsin, it has established a presence as close as Ohio. It attacks maples and other deciduous trees (trees that shed their leaves each fall).
Asian longhorned beetle adults are 1 to 1.5 inches long. Their bodies are shiny black with multiple white spots, and their long antennae have black and white stripes. They are active from July to September.
If you suspect you have spotted an Asian longhorned beetle, please take high-quality, close-up photos to help identify it and note your location as precisely as possible.
Report all detections of new and emerging insects to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection’s Pest Hotline at 866-440-7523 or [email protected].
For more information on identifying or controlling the pest, contact the DNR Forest Health specialist for your area: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/foresthealth/staff
