Instagram vs reality: No lawn is perfect, there's always going to be a spot to fix. Pictured is my backyard, and let me tell you, it's an uphill battle to keep it nice. I fertilize, control w**ds, aerate every year, slit seed the spots that die, fill my dog spots with soil and seed, and do everything in my power to keep it watered even without irrigation. Lawn care is a lot of work, but man is it rewarding and such a good excuse to enjoy the outdoors. So enjoy the process, expect some hiccups, and if you need any advice, give me a call!

As the last bits of snow melt, you may be noticing this light gray webbing on your lawn. This is gray snow mold which appears on turf after prolonged periods under snow cover. The best way to combat it is to lightly rake the affected areas. The grass should recover by itself after that!

I have had a lot of clients ask this year about dormant/dead turf around trees and next to landscape beds. Most of the time, the answer has been that the grass is losing a competition for water. You can see in this picture that all of the turf directly under these trees has gone dormant, and that's because the maples are stealing a lot of moisture from the turf. If you see this happening in your lawn, it's a good indication that both your turf and your tree could use a drink!

Thinking about doing some seeding this fall?

Grass seed is expensive, and the process of planting it and getting it to germinate can be daunting. But there are a couple key things that you can do to make sure it's successful. The first is making sure to have a great watering plan. Grass seed grows pretty shallow in the soil profile, and it's necessary to keep that surface soil moist throughout the growing process. Water needs will depend on weather conditions, but expect to water the grass seed daily, if not several times a day.

The second key is to have great seed soil contact. This means loosening any compact soil and making sure the seed is incorporated into it. This can be done with a rake and some elbow grease, but I love to use a slit seeder which creates an ideal seedbed and is a lot easier on the shoulders!
