๐ฆ๐ผ Leave it for the birds!
As fall approaches, you may be tempted to tidy up the garden, but leaving some of your perennials standing through fall and winter can provide big benefits for local wildlife!
๐ป Seed heads from coneflowers, Black-Eyed Susans, asters, goldenrod, bee balm, and Joe-Pye w**d provide a natural food source for finches and other birds.
๐ Hollow stems and dried plant material can give native bees and beneficial insects a place to overwinter.
๐ฆ Those overwintering insects also become an important spring food source for birds and their young.
๐ Standing stems and foliage provide winter cover and shelter while adding texture and interest to the winter garden.
Want to give your backyard birds a little extra help? ๐ฆ๐ฅ
Stop by Wentworth Nursery and check out our selection of bird seed and bird-feeding supplies! Supplementing the natural seeds in your garden with a well-stocked feeder can help keep chickadees, finches, cardinals, and other feathered visitors coming back throughout the seasons.
So before you grab the pruners, consider leaving a little mess behind, and keep those feeders filled! A garden that looks โfinishedโ for the season to us can still be hard at work supporting wildlife.
Leave the seeds. Leave the stems. Feed the birds. Support the pollinators. ๐
