It feels like summer just started, but the buses are back on the roads around Marthasville and the mornings are going to start getting cooler before we know it.
With the kids back in the classroom, the back-to-school germs are inevitable. Pretty soon, we will all be shutting our windows for the season and relying on our furnaces to keep the chill out. The downside to sealing up our houses is that it traps those classroom germs, along with everyday dust and allergens, inside with us. Because of this, indoor air quality almost always takes a dip this time of year.
As someone who works with residential heating and air every day, my best advice is to give your system a little attention now, before the cold weather really sets in.
The easiest thing you can do this week is swap out your furnace filter. A fresh filter is your first line of defense against recirculating whatever the kids brought home.
It is also a smart idea to turn your furnace on for a 15-minute test run. It is much better to catch a weird rattle or a dusty smell now than on the first freezing night of the year. If it has been a while since your system had a professional maintenance check, getting a tune-up on the calendar is a great proactive step to ensure it runs safely all winter.
Finally, if anyone in your family struggles with fall allergies or seems to catch every bug that goes around, it might be worth looking into whole-home indoor air quality options. Equipment like advanced purifiers or air scrubbers can actually be added right to your existing ductwork to help neutralize airborne germs.
We want to make sure our community stays comfortable and healthy this fall.
