As I walked toward the front door of the house, I noticed an area to the right of the deck that caught my attention. I had a strong feeling this could be the area hiding the rodent entry point. Once I crawled underneath the house, I confirmed it—I had found the entry point.

My customer told me that another BIG national company had previously sealed the openings with spray foam. I understand that the vent was difficult to access because it’s located underneath the deck. However, rodents can chew through wood, plastic, and even spray foam.

For long-term rodent exclusion, I prefer to use materials that rodents can’t easily chew through. In this case, I screened the entire area to create a more durable barrier and help prevent rodents from gaining entry again.

A mouse can squeeze through an opening about 1/4 inch (6 mm) wide—roughly the diameter of a pencil.

🐭 Mice: about 1/4 inch
🐀 Rats: about 1/2 inch, though larger rats generally need more room
🐀 Young/small rats: can sometimes use openings closer to 1/2 inch

For rodent exclusion work, a good rule is: if you can fit a pencil through it, treat it as a potential mouse entry point.
