The door was still in good condition, but the exterior wood trim had peeling paint and visible damage, especially near the bottom.

We replaced the old trim with new white PVC trim. Unlike wood, PVC doesn’t rot or absorb water, so it’s a good choice for exterior doors exposed to rain, snow, and moisture.

If you’re dealing with the same problem, check the wood near the bottom of the door first. That’s often where moisture damage starts, and replacing just the trim can save you the cost of replacing the entire door.

Repaired the top of this chimney instead of replacing it. The existing crown had several cracks, and the concrete around one of the flues had already broken away.

We cleaned out the damaged areas, repaired the cracks, rebuilt the missing section around the flue, and resurfaced the crown with a new protective cement layer. We also cleaned and repainted the metal flashing around the base.

Small cracks at the top of a chimney are worth fixing before water gets into them. Minnesota freeze-thaw cycles can turn a small crack into a much larger repair.

Installed new railings on the concrete steps.

The steps were not perfectly level, so the posts had to be leveled with shims. This is probably the most difficult part if you decide to install railings yourself - getting every post perfectly vertical while keeping the railing sections properly aligned.

We also repaired damaged areas and holes in the concrete, filled the gap between the walkway and the porch with self-leveling sealant and sand, and finished by painting the entire porch.

This patio and walkway were still in good shape, but years of dirt, moss and weather had hidden most of the original color.

We pressure washed the entire surface, removed the old joint sand, filled the joints with new polymeric sand, and finished it with a wet-look sealer. The sealer brought the colors back and also helps protect the pavers from water, dirt and staining.

If you’re doing this yourself, give the pavers enough time to dry before applying the sealer. Moisture trapped inside the pavers or joints can leave a cloudy white appearance under the coating. Also make sure all loose polymeric sand is completely removed from the surface before sealing. Once it’s under the sealer, fixing it becomes much harder.

A good cleaning, fresh joints and sealer can make old pavers look completely different without replacing anything.

This is exposed basement insulation that had been damaged by years of sun exposure. Once the paint started failing, UV slowly destroyed the spray foam. It became brittle, started falling apart, and left holes where water, insects, and small animals could get in.

We removed the damaged foam completely, including slightly below the gravel level, and replaced it with rigid foam board. The bottom and joints were sealed with spray foam so the new insulation connects with the existing insulation below grade. Then we painted the exposed surface to protect it from UV.

There is another reason not to simply remove this insulation and leave the concrete exposed. The insulation helps keep the inside surface of the basement wall warmer. In winter, if that surface gets cold enough to fall below the dew point of the indoor air, moisture can condense on it. That’s one of the reasons continuous insulation around a basement foundation matters.

You can absolutely do this repair yourself. The important part is not just making it look better. Remove all loose and damaged foam, continue the repair slightly below grade, seal the gaps between old and new insulation, and protect any exposed foam from sunlight with a compatible coating or finish.

Another garage finished.✅

The walls and ceiling were unfinished drywall, and the concrete floor was bare. We finished the drywall, painted everything white, and coated the floor with anti-skid paint.

Nothing complicated, but the difference is huge.

A garage doesn’t have to be perfect to make a huge difference.

For this project we finished the drywall, painted the walls and ceiling, refreshed the cabinets, and coated the floor with epoxy. Now the whole space feels brighter, cleaner, and much easier to use.

One thing I’ve noticed is that when a garage is clean and light, you actually enjoy walking into it. It’s easier to keep organized, easier to find things, and it gives the whole house a better first impression. That can even help when it’s time to sell.

If you’re thinking about doing your own garage, don’t get stuck trying to make the drywall look like a living room. It’s still a garage. A few small waves or imperfections won’t matter once everything is painted and the shelves, cabinets, and tools are back in place.

Aluminum railing installation that meets current safety standards. It’s a small change that makes a big difference every time you use the front entrance.

DIY tip: One thing many people don’t expect is that concrete landings are rarely perfectly level. If you want your posts to be truly plumb, you’ll often need to use composite shims under the base plates before tightening the anchors. Trying to force a post into position usually leaves the railing looking crooked.

Guard height must be at least 36 inches, and openings should not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through.

This deck was headed for a full replacement, but after a closer inspection, the boards told a different story.

The homeowner was ready to replace everything, but the structure was still solid. The real problem was the failing paint, not the wood itself. After checking the condition of the boards, we decided to restore the original deck instead of replacing it, saving a significant amount of money while keeping the deck’s original character.

DIY tip: If you’re unsure whether an old deck needs replacement, don’t judge it by appearance alone. In many cases, drilling a small test hole in a questionable board can tell you more than the surface ever will. If the wood is still dense and solid inside, restoration may be a much better option than replacement.

Built these heavy-duty basement storage shelves from standard framing lumber and OSB, giving the homeowner a lot more organized storage space without spending a fortune on store-bought shelving.

One thing I always recommend for DIYers: build shelves deeper only if you can still reach everything in the back. Extra depth sounds great until boxes start disappearing behind other boxes.

Another tip for basement shelving: leave a few inches between the shelves and the concrete wall. Concrete can collect moisture over time, and that small gap helps with airflow and keeps stored items in better condition.

The supervisor approved the project before I left.
