🔑 ASK JIMMY MONDAY — Why does my car key cost more than a regular key?

It’s a fair question. A modern car key may look simple from the outside, but there can be quite a bit happening inside.

Depending on your vehicle, that key or fob may contain a transponder chip, remote or proximity electronics, immobilizer communication, and an emergency key blade. Then the correct key still needs to be identified, cut when necessary, and properly programmed to your vehicle.

So when you’re having an automotive key made, you’re not just paying for a piece of metal or plastic — you’re paying for the correct key, specialized equipment, programming, cutting, and the knowledge to make everything work with your vehicle’s security system.

And there’s another reason I ask for your year, make, model, VIN and sometimes a picture of your existing key or fob before quoting a job: I want to make sure I’m giving you the correct information and price the first time.

Demonstrate competence before asking for the business.

That’s something I’ve come to believe more and more as a business owner.

I’ve never been a fan of pressure sales. I don’t want to convince someone that they have to hire me.

I’d rather answer their questions. Give them useful information. Explain their options. Maybe even help them save some money — and then let them decide.

Because if you know what you’re doing, you shouldn’t have to pressure people into choosing you.

Give people enough value before they ever spend a dollar with you, and choosing you becomes the easy part.

You may not win every job that way.

But the customers you do win tend to remember you, trust you, recommend you, and come back.

I’d rather build a business on that than on being the best salesman in the room.

Demonstrate competence. Provide value. Earn trust.
Then let the customer decide.

“Why does Jimmy ask for my VIN and pictures of my current key or key fob before giving me a quote?”

There are actually a couple of important reasons — accuracy and security.

🚗 First, I want to make sure I’m quoting you for the RIGHT key.

The same year, make and model can sometimes have several different keys or fobs depending on trim level, ignition type and vehicle options. Two remotes can even look almost identical while using different part numbers or FCC IDs.

Your VIN, along with pictures of your existing key or fob when available, helps me identify exactly what your vehicle needs before I order parts or show up for the job.

That means fewer surprises, the correct equipment and parts, and a more accurate price upfront.

🔐 Second, automotive locksmithing involves vehicle security.

When making or programming vehicle keys — particularly when all keys have been lost — I may need to verify identification and proof that you’re authorized to have a key made for that vehicle.

That’s not me trying to make things difficult. 😂 It’s part of doing automotive locksmith work responsibly and protecting you, your vehicle, and my business.

So if Jimmy starts asking for your year, make, model, VIN, pictures of the key/fob, and sometimes proof of ownership or authorization, there’s a reason:

“I bought a key fob online. Can you program it for me?”

In many cases, yes! I’ve actually been programming quite a few customer-supplied fobs lately.

The important part is making sure you buy the right fob for your vehicle. Two fobs can look almost identical but have different FCC IDs, part numbers, frequencies, or vehicle compatibility — and unfortunately, finding that out after you’ve already bought it can cost you time and money.

👉 Before you order one, feel free to send me the listing or a picture of the fob. I’d much rather help you verify it first than have you show up with something that won’t work with your vehicle.

Q: I locked my keys in my car. What should I do first?

Jimmy: First, don’t panic — and don’t start trying to pry the door open yourself. Improvised tools and excessive force can damage weather stripping, trim, wiring, or the door itself.

Before calling anyone, quickly check every door and the trunk if it’s accessible. You’d be surprised how often one door is still unlocked.

If everything is locked, give me a call. In many situations, I can come directly to you and get you back into your vehicle without damaging it.

And if a child or pet is locked inside, especially in dangerous temperatures, treat it as an emergency and call 911 immediately.
