Any mom will know that most kids don’t love being woken up…but it’s so redeeming to have animals that LOVE my wakeups (yes, it’s because I come with treats, but hey!!) 😆 Isn’t that snorting just the best?? These sweet piggies love every bit of food I give them, too, and they don’t complain a bit. It’s nice to have that experience every now and again, right mamas??

One thing about growing fruit is that most of it is usually ripe at the same time and then you have a big project to process it all! We inherited some beautiful Concord greatness when we moved to this new place and they were ripe this last weekend, and since my parents were in town they helped us process them. Come along on the journey and see what we turned all of these grapes into!

Shish*to peppers: have you had them before?? They’re so unique, delicious and easy to grow - here are the highlights:

*one plant produces enough peppers for a whole year!
*they are one of the first peppers ready to pick
*you broil them WHOLE (stems and all) with a little olive oil and salt, till both sides are charred.
*eat everything but the stem
*you can freeze them from fresh by simply packing into bags or containers. We vacuum seal them.
*you can broil them from frozen without thawing
**note that every now and again, a shish*to will be spicy - but most of them are not!

What’s everyone else doing after they put their kids to bed?? This is pretty much where you’ll find us and what you’ll find us doing, especially in September… I keep reminding myself that in January when all I have to do to put a meal on the table is to pull it off the shelf or out of the freezer, I will be so grateful for these months of hard work!

Seed saving: bean edition! Beans and peas are super easy to save seeds from - just leave some pods on the plants and let them dry there, then harvest and shell. Once you have shelled beans, you let them dry at room temperature for a while and then you can put them away where you keep your seeds! Alternately, if you have a ton of dry beans from letting your beans go to seeds, you can let them dry and use them like you would dry beans - soak them overnight in water and drain, rinse, and cook them. It’s really nice second crop from your green bean plants :-)

So we’re not quite in official Fall yet, but it is starting to be time to save those seeds! This is your cilantro edition. 😃 Cilantro is one of my favorite and one of the easiest plants to save seeds from – and because the plant is so sensitive to hot temperatures, it is really easy to get it to go to seed. Check out this video to learn how to save the seeds for planting again maybe right now for a late fall harvest or next year in the spring. By the way, cilantro seeds are also known as coriander seeds so you don’t have to buy that again either!

Fruit fly season is here…ugh. They feed on all my produce on the counters and they’re not my favorite kitchen companions. It was finally time to set up my fruit fly trap - it is so simple:
- Add apple cider vinegar to a jar
- Put a few drops of dish soap in it
- Cover the jar with plastic wrap and poke some holes in it with a toothpick, place it near your compost or your produce and let the flies come on in!
