Bring back the built-ins or leave them behind?

One thing I love most about older homes is how they incorporated function into every nook and cranny by implementing beautiful built-in cabinetry and shelving. These days, every home is covered in drywall from top to bottom with no unique architectural features.

I tried implementing some built-in style shelving into this new home I am designing, mostly to make use of an otherwise unusable/wasted wide hallway/passage area. Unfortunately, the clients are requesting to remove it.

Would you prefer to bring back character and functionality into home design, or are you Team Blank-Slate? Share your thoughts!

Center or Off-Center?
I come across this design conundrum a lot when designing homes - When it comes to fireplaces, it seems that the default is to center the fireplace and put the TV above it.
First of all, in design there is never a "wrong" answer, but rather it's about finding what works best for the people living in the space.
From a professional design perspective, however, I try to steer people away from mounting a TV above a fireplace for two main reasons:
1. Heat can become an issue for the longevity of the TV.
2. The TV ends up getting mounted so high and you end up having to look upwards to view it, causing neck pain and all-around discomfort from an ergonomic perspective.
Bonus reason: a fireplace can become more of a feature or focal point without being interrupted with a TV.
So I'm curious: are you more team Center Fireplace or team Off-Center Fireplace??
