Colorado’s forests are living systems, and managing them starts with understanding what’s happening on the land. 🌲

Our approach to mountain forestry is customized to each property and its surrounding forest biome. We look at the landscape as a whole, considering how the different elements interact and what will support a healthier, more resilient system over time.

It’s the same philosophy we bring to all of our work: thoughtful intervention, respect for the existing ecosystem, and solutions that make sense for Colorado’s unique landscapes.

Because good land stewardship isn’t about controlling nature. It’s about knowing how to work alongside it. 🤎

Xeriscaping isn’t about creating a landscape with less but about designing one that works smarter. 🌿
In Colorado’s dry climate, thoughtful plant choices can help reduce water use, build resilience, support local ecosystems, and create a landscape that feels right at home.

At Urban Oasis, we design xeriscapes that work with nature, not against it, bringing together the right plants, placement, and landscape elements to create outdoor spaces built to thrive.

In every landscape, even the smallest details have a reason behind them.

Take a dry creek, for example. We’re not just choosing rocks based on what looks good. The size, placement, and mix of stone all play a role in how water moves through the channel.

Larger stones help create stability, while smaller material fills the gaps and adds texture that can help slow the flow. We also want the finished creek to feel like it belongs in the landscape, not like a drainage ditch running through it.

It’s a small detail, but thoughtful details like these can make a big difference in how a landscape looks and functions over time. 🌱

Composting in Colorado takes more than tossing scraps into a pile and hoping for the best. 🌱

Our dry air, strong sun, temperature swings, and winter weather can all affect how quickly organic material breaks down. The key is creating the right microclimate for the worms, bacteria, fungi, and other decomposers doing the real work.

That means managing moisture, airflow, temperature, pile size, and the balance of greens and browns. When those conditions are right, compost becomes a powerful way to turn waste into healthier, more resilient soil.

A good compost pile isn’t just sitting there. It’s a living system you’re actively managing.

A thoughtfully designed water feature can completely change how a landscape looks, sounds, and functions. 💧

For this property, the goal was to create a peaceful focal point that helped soften constant road noise while supporting local wildlife. We carefully considered how the water would move through the space, where it could capture surface runoff, and how to make it feel like a natural part of the landscape.

Drops in elevation keep the water moving and oxygenated while creating that calming sound. Rocks, planting pockets, and aquatic roots provide surface area for beneficial bacteria, helping maintain cleaner, healthier water for the wildlife that visits.

Even the beginning and end of the feature were obscured to break up sightlines and make the water appear as though it has always belonged there.

Beautiful for people. Functional for the landscape. Valuable for wildlife.

A swale has an important job to do, but first it needs to survive the water it catches.

Newly constructed swales can be vulnerable to erosion before plant roots become established. Armoring the banks with cobble, logs, or hügelkultur-style wood banks provides protection during this transition.

In permaculture, we call this stacking functions. The materials stabilize the soil, create protected microclimates, manage moisture, and support healthy plant growth. As the wood decomposes and plants fill in, the temporary armor gradually becomes a living bioswale.

It’s a landscape designed to evolve, with each element doing more than one job. 🌱

Some plants earn their place in the landscape in more ways than one, and Amaranth is definitely one of them. 🌿

It grows quickly from seed, handles heat and dry conditions, and helps occupy open spaces while slower-growing perennials become established. Its dense foliage can suppress weeds and may even attract hungry grasshoppers away from neighbouring plants.

Beyond its practical role, amaranth adds striking colour, height, and texture to the garden. Its leaves and nutritious seeds are edible too.

For us, good planting design means looking beyond appearance and understanding how each plant can support the landscape around it.

Would you make room for amaranth in your garden?

A foundational concept we mastered after years of caring for landscapes is that healthy plants do not always need more water. They need water to reach the root zone.

We use deep watering to encourage stronger roots, improve drought tolerance, and reduce water lost to evaporation and runoff. As xeriscapes become established, we gradually adjust watering based on how each plant responds.

We also recommend using multiple drip zones. This gives us better control over plants with different watering needs.

For us, smart irrigation means healthier landscapes and less wasted water. 💧🌿
