The siding installation is underway on our Wenham exterior renovation, and the transformation is really starting to come together.

After completing the preparation and weatherproofing, installing the new bay window and metal roof, and replacing the deteriorated wood trim with PVC, we’re now installing the new siding across the front of the home.

This is the stage where all the work underneath begins to show in the finished appearance—but what matters just as much is what’s behind it: proper preparation, flashing, drainage, and weather protection.

What We Found Inside These Porch Columns | Swampscott, MA

This project started with one porch column.

Once we opened it up, we discovered that the decorative column base was built from hollow 3/4-inch pine boards. There was no structural framing inside the column to transfer the roof load down to the footings.

In other words, the decorative pine box was never intended to serve as structural support, yet it had been carrying the weight of the porch roof for years.

After rebuilding the first column, the homeowner asked us to inspect the remaining columns. We found the same condition throughout the porch.

Our repair included:

✔ Temporarily shoring the roof to safely support the structure during construction
✔ Building a new structural support system inside each column to properly transfer the roof load to the footings
✔ Wrapping the new column bases with solid PVC sheet material to eliminate seams and help prevent future water intrusion

So far, we’ve rebuilt five columns, and we’ll be returning next year to replace the remaining columns and porch railings.

A porch column should do more than look good—it should safely support the structure above it. That’s why we focus on what’s behind the finish, not just what you can see.

Before & After | Solving the Real Problem, Not Just the Damage

At first glance, this looked like a simple case of rotted trim. But once we opened the assembly, we discovered the real cause of the problem.

When this porch was originally built, a pine spacer board was installed horizontally between the pressure-treated framing and the exterior finish board. Unfortunately, that detail trapped water instead of allowing it to drain, creating the perfect environment for moisture damage, wood rot, and carpenter ants.

Rather than simply replacing the damaged materials, we corrected the design flaw.

The rotted components were removed and replaced with a new PVC finish board. We also installed vertical PVC spacers, allowing water to drain properly while promoting airflow between the framing and finish material.

Small details like these make a big difference in the long-term performance of exterior woodwork.
