When the customer says "I can get it done cheaper":

In 2017 I quoted this customer $1650 to replace his furnace with a new Goodman 10 year parts warranty 20 year heat exchanger warranty furnace. He said said "I can get it done cheaper"

He told me he had a guy who would sell him a brand new furnace for 800 and install it for 500

total $1300 savings $350

During the installation the guy hit him up for 150 bucks twice, for additional sheet metal

Total $1600 savings $50

Well here's where the story gets interesting, in the course of the last 5 years the furnace has never worked correctly from day one. The awful job the installer did wrapping the sheet metal around the side of the furnace instead of turning the furnace for proper installation was starving it for air and causing it to just run till it overheated instead of ever reaching temp. Also he ran a out 19 feet of exhaust pipe in the wrong direction and ran it into dryer vent before going into the chimney, and sloped the water heater vent downward then wrapped it with aluminum foil to stop the carbon leak caused by the improper pitch.... Finally the customer works up the courage to call me back.

He said every year he has a couple guys come in pretend to fix it charge him 300 to 350 then block his number or just never call him back when it's not fixed. X's 5 years

Total $4600 savings $(-2950)

Just wait there's pictures .....

Continuing on, each winter he has tenants that stop paying rent because they can't heat the home. About 3 months each, till the tenants finally move out with unpaid rent of about 2100 bucks.

Total cost $15,100 total savings $(-13,400) loss.......

Here's the good part. The manufacture date on the furnace is 2008 meaning the brand new furnace the installer sold him was least 9 years old. The first pictures are the original installers work. The next pictures are our work and also why the landlord would have received in 2017 if he would have just spent another $50 bucks. Only now with inflation and rising equipment costs it now cost him $2200 tondo it correctly

Total cost $17,300 total savings $(-15,650)

The 50 bucks this poor guy saved ended up costing him over 15 grand....

Quick look at my competitors work..

I wouldn't normally do this but this particular post was some what alarming.

These sponsored posts pop up on my timeline quite often and do the most part I leave them alone.. I see small mistakes and short cuts all the time and I understand were all new at this in the beginning.

One thing I noticed more than anything is that people are really unaware of the quality of work they're receiving.

One thing about this picture is the guy puts the new furnace on an 8" riser as of to elevate it for flood purposes but leaves the filter cabinet on the ground.. the problem with that is that if the filter gets even the smallest amount of water on it then it is like trying to pull air through a brick wall. This will for sure over heat the heat exchanger trigger the limit switched and shave 10 years off the life of the furnace and probably expose the residents to small amounts of carbon monoxide for years before they suspect they're 10 year old furnace is bad already.

It's obvious the reason he didn't raise up the filter cabinet because he doesn't know how to shorten the trunk duct he places above it. This is evident by the tape he uses on his seams. The tape is multi purposed on his return drop.. one he uses it because he doesn't know how to fold back the ducts to interlock with each other and secondly because his drop is at such angle that his end seams wouldn't close up all the way.. these guys lie and tell you the tape is for added leak protection truth is the tape is only used to cover up really s**tty work.

Any self respecting installer would have transitioned the return drop.over 2" closer to the furnace and came down with a nice square cemitrical drop and used S and Drive cleats to close up the seams..

If you look at the top of the furnace and AC coil enclosure you'll see a lot more tape so much tape it even covers the doors to the coil enclosure. The reason for this is because he does not know how to fl**ge his transition to the top of the coil. These is a two fold air tight fl**ge he could fold into his metal or a simple 3/8" bend and silicone sealant that both work perfect and look very professional. He opted out of both.

Truth is this customer should have demanded the work be corrected . But back to my original thought is customers really don't know what professional work should look like.. now instead of demanding the work be corrected this customer is recommending this guy to all his friends..

It doesn't stop there as immoral as this guy's work is he is equally immoral in his marketing practices. In any of his ads he will mention that he is a veteran usually 5 or more times but if you look at the firnace he installed it is a German furnace manufactured through (international corporation products) HEIL brand once German based, is now manufactured by (ICP Canada) nothing like igniting your patriotism to send your money right out of the country..

In closing people please do your research look closer at these guys (before and after) years pics.. go ahead and look at the big dogs web sites for comparison reference on what real high quality work should look like. Your HVAC system is no small investment and absolutely should not be left in the hands of hacks and crooks.

The initial installer charged this landlord $100 bucks to ""transition"" this return drop, I charged $150 to fix it.. people, you gotta learn what bull s**t smells like and learn how to stay away from it.. my prices may not always be the cheapest you'll find but I can guarantee you that no amount of money on the planet can buy you any better quality work then what you get from me. PERIOD.

Some of you know that I'm always posting pictures of rare, old or unique things we find inside the furnaces and ducts that we work on. What I don't post pictures of is the thing we find most commonly.

What I'm doing is a trivia contest of sorts. The person who correctly guesses what we most commonly find in the furnace returns will win the Mr BBQ grill set pictured below.. no gimmicks no get my foot in your door inspection giveaways. Just a good ole fashion prize to the winner.

To simplify things there are two answers I will accept as correct since the two items most commonly found are kind of related. Please don't be vague with your answers like "toys" or "dust" and try to only take a few guesses. Anyone shooting out a dictionary of answers will not win.. let's keep this fun and I'll do something similar every week. Other installers I'm sorry but I also want to keep it fair. Please don't ruin it.
The winner must give me permission to use their name and picture for future promotions.. thanks.

I'll give more hints of it becomes necessary in the comments.. but I can tell you now it's not animal or rodents. It's not money or jewelery, it's not those nerf darts that disappeared on you.. just try to think way back to those (oh crap) moments you had as a kid. I am going to boost this post so it will be available to the general public as well as to everyone on my personal page. The BBQ set will be shipped directly to the winners house from the manufacturer..it takes about a week to arrive. Place your guesses on the main comments and not in the replys to other comments .. thanks again and good luck.

This is why I do not recommend covering your condenser in the winter. They retain moisture under the cover and create a nice environment for fungus and mold. And like this one their teenage daughter turned the unit on while the cover was in place and fried it. We installed this unit 2 years ago and it looks worse than. Most 30 year old units we pull out. They were very very lucky that my supplier let me return the entire unit under warranty.. but it was still a 600.00 mistake for reinstallation. You can see the tarp lying next to the unit. Please people for your own good. DO NOT COVER YOUR CONDENSERS.....
