🌳 THAT W**D MAT MIGHT BE HURTING YOUR TREE. 😬

W**d fabric is meant to stop weeds… but around trees, it can create a problem you may not see until years later.

What happens underneath?
When the soil surface is covered, water, oxygen, organic matter and nutrients become harder for the tree’s roots to access.

So the roots start looking for what they need — often moving upward and spreading along the surface.

And that’s where future problems can begin.

Shallow, poorly developed roots can mean:
• Less drought tolerance
• Poorer nutrient uptake
• Root competition and circling
• Reduced stability
• Greater vulnerability during high winds and storms
• Roots eventually growing into places they shouldn’t

The tree isn’t being difficult…

It’s adapting to the conditions we created.

What looks like a simple way to control weeds today could be creating a much bigger tree-health and stability problem years down the road.

Healthy trees need healthy soil — not a blanket over their roots.

🌳 YOUR TREE COULD BE CHOKING ITSELF. 😳

Girdling roots are roots that grow around the trunk instead of outward into the soil. As they get larger, they can literally strangle the tree by squeezing the trunk and restricting the flow of water and nutrients.

What does it look like?
• Roots wrapping around or pressing against the trunk
• A trunk that looks pinched, flattened, or has a pronounced indentation
• Little or no visible root flare
• Roots growing in a circle instead of spreading outward

How does it happen?
Often from planting too deeply, improper planting, compacted soil, or roots being unable to grow outward.

Why does it matter?
Girdling roots can weaken root development, restrict water and nutrient movement, compromise stability, and increase the tree’s vulnerability to drought, storms, and eventual decline.

And here’s the scary part: the tree can look perfectly healthy while the problem is developing underground.

See something suspicious around your tree’s trunk? Don’t ignore it. Early detection can make a BIG difference.

Oak Arbor Care — We don’t just cut trees down. We look for the why behind the problem. 🌳

🐓 MEET THE NEWEST MEMBERS OF THE OAK ARBOR CARE CREW.

We had some extra help on the job yesterday… and these guys came with their own set of pruning tools.

No chainsaws.
No climbing gear.
No bucket truck.

Just four legs, a big appetite, and a questionable understanding of what constitutes ā€œselective pruning.ā€ 🤣

Apparently donkeys are natural browsers and will happily snack on vegetation, including branches and brush.

Their job title?

🌿 Certified (Ar)Borists

Specialty: Low-impact vegetation management.

Their hourly rate: Paid in snacks. šŸ„•

We may need to rethink our equipment budget.

Now in search of Beavers for tree felling operations.

The trees farther away from the road look perfectly healthy.

WHAT’S YOUR GUESS?

Aļøāƒ£ Not enough water
Bļøāƒ£ Nutrient deficiency
Cļøāƒ£ Insects or disease
Dļøāƒ£ Something from the road is affecting the tree
Eļøāƒ£ The tree is just being dramatic

Drop your answer below!!!

At Oak Arbor Care, we’re big believers in diagnosing the problem before reaching for the chainsaw.

TUESDAY TREE FACT!
Did you know your tree can be thirsty… even when the soil looks wet?

Yep! A tree’s root system is a lot more complicated than most people realize.

A big portion of a tree’s fine feeder roots are located OUT near the tree’s drip line, not directly against the trunk.

That means watering your tree with a little sprinkler spray right at the trunk isn’t necessarily doing much for the roots that actually take up water and nutrients!

TREE TIP:
Next time you water, think WIDE and SLOW instead of just dumping water at the base.

And here’s the fun part…

QUIZ TIME:
Where do you think the majority of a tree’s roots are?

A) Straight down under the trunk
B)Mostly near the surface and spreading outward
C) Mostly 10+ feet underground
D) Roots can spread up to 3x the width of the canopy
E) I have absolutely no idea

Drop your answer below! ā¬‡ļø

And if your trees could use a little TLC, Oak Arbor Care believes in figuring out WHY a tree is struggling, not automatically reaching for the chainsaw. 🌳

•Tree Diagnostics
•Soil Restoration
•Pruning & Trimming
•Tree Removal
•Stump Grinding
•Emergency Storm Damage
