Project complete at the Kroger shopping center in Ashland, Kentucky. The scope covered about 900 tons of asphalt across four large areas, with the largest section at 325 tons, plus 10 to 12 smaller patches around the property. We completed the paving in two days with two mobilizations, and the crew is finishing the striping today.

The property is three hours from our Louisville base, and in 18 years of paving this is the farthest into Eastern Kentucky I have taken a crew. Setting up material supply with Mountain Enterprises ahead of the start date allowed us to meet the customer's timeline, and minimal disruption to the businesses in the center was the priority throughout.

What does a 900 ton parking lot look like before the first load hits the ground? This is me walking the Kroger shopping center in Ashland, Kentucky at six in the morning, laying out the plan for the crew.

The night before, we cracksealed 6,500 feet and cut the edge keys around every section we were overlaying, so the lot was ready for mix at first light. From there it was 375 tons on day one and another 525 on day two, in and out with two mobilizations. In 18 years of paving I had never taken a crew this far into Eastern Kentucky, and a property manager who needed it done fast is exactly the kind of job we like.

I voluntarily put myself at the bottom of the pyramid. The crew, my family, the business, everybody eats first. Three years into building this company, I learned the hard way what that costs when you never refill your own tank, and getting back to taking care of myself gave me my clarity back as a leader. Oxygen mask on yourself first: you can't be useful to anybody around you if you're not taking care of yourself.

"There's no one else in the labor pool" is not a reason to keep a problem on the crew. If somebody is a cancer to the culture, we get them out and figure the rest out. We just lived it: talked it through with our key guys, and let a guy go last week even though we're short on hands. The culture comes first.

Don't wait until September to find out you missed your number. Know your expenses, know the gross margin number that has to come in the door to cover the year, and check it mid-season while there's still time to fix it. That discipline carried me from the ADC days to building Pave It Forward, and it's the difference between finishing the year strong and just hoping. Right now there are still 100 days left in the season. Do the math now, not in October.

"So basically you ride around in a truck all day." Every owner has heard some version of it.

In this clip, the crew listed forty things Kevin supposedly gets to do now that he's off the paver. Kevin didn't argue. He just made an offer. Anybody who thinks the job is riding around in the AC can carry his cell phone for one eight-hour day. After that, we'll talk about who wants to be back on the rake.

Have a promising crew member thinking about quitting their first month on the crew? Andre started as a shovel guy. Military, blue collar, 300-degree days.

His advice: be a sponge, ask questions, and trust that it gets better. It did for him, he runs the paver now.

One of the things I like most about our team are the conversations that keep us going throughout the day.

Smoke has been with me a long time and he is as reliable as they come. He's always good for an entertaining story as well.

His reliability is what helps makes the company run, and his personality is what makes each day a little bit better.

I am so grateful to have a team and crew around me that makes my job easier and more enjoyable coming to work every day.

Ever wonder what a real parking lot repair actually looks like? Kevin is out at a Longhorn in Clarksville, Indiana walking through a four-inch mill-and-pave on five or six bad failure areas.

Two and a half inches of base, an inch and a half of surface, 225 tons of hot mix, breakdown roller and finish roller working it in.

This is what it takes to fix a parking lot the right way... not a thin overlay over the same problems, but actually cutting the failure out and rebuilding it. The crew was on site at 5:30 AM to get in and out before the lot got busy.
