The California patio is changing.

It no longer has to be just a concrete pad, a grill, and a few lonely pots trying their best.

It can become something more meaningful.

A place of shade.
A place to exhale.
A place where birds, butterflies, fragrance, filtered light, and privacy come closer to daily life.

A patio can become a sanctuary.

Black and green is one of my favorite garden combinations.

In this garden I designed, the black structure gives the space depth, drama, and definition, while the layered greens bring softness, movement, and life.

Together, they help create a small microclimate — cooler, more sheltered, more humid, and more inviting. With shade, enclosure, planting layers, and atmosphere, a patio can become more than an outdoor space. It can become a little world of its own.

A garden tour is never just about naming plants.

On this walk, we talked about the bones of the garden — the structure, shade, movement, and mature trees that shape the whole property. We also talked about what residents can do with their own personal outdoor spaces: patios, balconies, and rooftop gardens.

Every garden has a larger story, and every small space can become part of it.

Sometimes the best place to start is by looking up, understanding how large the trees will become, noticing the light, and imagining what your own corner of the garden could be.

The new wildlife crossing at Liberty Canyon in Agoura Hills, spanning the 101 Freeway, is the kind of project that gives me hope.

At its heart, it understands something simple and profound: landscapes are not decoration. They are living systems. Animals need passage. Habitats need connection. Cities and roads should not mean the end of movement, migration, or wildness.

This is exactly the kind of thinking that inspires Indah Bulan Gardens — designing with nature, not against it. Whether it’s a freeway crossing for mountain lions or a small urban garden for people, the goal is the same: create spaces where life can move, shelter, adapt, and thrive.
