You can spend four months choosing a stone.

Then the room is lit with whatever was on the fixture schedule, and every one of those decisions gets flattened. Ketra fixtures have a high color rendering index, which means what you chose is what you see. They also tune across the full range of natural daylight, so a room holds crisp light in the morning and warms down through the evening. Paired with Lutron HomeWorks, the handoff from daylight to electric light happens without anyone in the room noticing it happened.

Our latest blog makes the case for treating lighting as part of the design palette rather than something specified at the end.

Santa Ana season starts this month.

The winds come down through the passes hot and dry, usually with very little warning, and they're hard on anything mounted to the outside of a house. Awnings, screens, pergola louvers, patio furniture that felt heavy enough in July.

The systems we install have wind sensors. When conditions cross the threshold the shading responds on its own, and it returns to position once they pass. Nobody has to be home. Nobody has to remember.

It's the least visible thing we do and the one that pays for itself the first time it happens.

One note while you're thinking about the season. Custom work runs 8 to 12 weeks from design to install, so October is the month that decides whether a project is done before the holidays.

Most people think about protecting art from the sun. Fewer think about the lighting they installed to look at it.

LED emits far less UV than daylight, but light is still light. Enough hours of it, at the wrong intensity, will move pigment on a canvas. Museums have worked around this for decades by controlling how much light a work receives and what is in that light.

Ketra came out of that world before it moved into homes. The spectrum is tunable and the output is controlled, so what lands on a painting is light somebody chose for it rather than whatever the fixture happened to emit.

It also simply looks better. Warmer after dinner, cooler at midday, and the work reads the same at nine at night as it did at noon.

If there is anything on your walls worth protecting, the lighting is half that conversation. The shading is the other half.

On September 22, the sun sets due west. Exactly west.

It happens twice a year, and it is why west facing glass in Los Angeles is at its worst in the days around it. The sun sits low, aims straight through the window, and passes under every overhang the architect drew. Rooms that behave perfectly in June become unusable at four in the afternoon for about three weeks.

Most people read it as a heat problem and reach for a heavier fabric. It is a geometry problem, and it is also a UV problem. The same low angle that creates the glare puts direct sun on floors, art, and upholstery for hours a day.

A 3 to 5 percent openness sunscreen answers both. The glare goes, the UV load drops, and the view stays exactly where it was.

If there is a room in your house you quietly stop sitting in this time of year, this is why.

The patio stopped being a patio a while ago.

In Los Angeles it gets counted as living space now. Buyers walk through it like a room, and the ones that feel like rooms are the ones people actually use. What separates the two is almost always shade. A patio that bakes from noon to four is a view. A patio you can sit on at one in the afternoon is square footage.

Motorized awnings are what close that gap. Hundreds of fabrics and frame finishes so it matches the exterior instead of fighting it, Lutron integration so it moves with the rest of the house, and wind and sun sensors that retract it before weather becomes a problem.

Labor Day weekend closes out the season, and around here the best way to spend it hasn't changed: shade over the table, good company, and nobody in a hurry to head inside.
However you're spending it, we hope it's a good one.

Most awnings announce themselves. Exposed hoods, visible arms, a shape that reads as a catalog item bolted onto a house someone spent two years designing.

It doesn't have to go that way, but the decision gets made earlier than most people realize. Bring the awning in late and the conversation becomes design intent versus budget. Bring it in while the fascia and soffit details are still open, and the whole system can disappear into them. Fabric matched to the palette, hardware concealed, the outdoor space behaving like part of the house instead of an addition to it.

We also carry an eight-year Lutron service warranty, which means anything that comes up down the line is our problem to solve, not yours to explain to a client.

The design calendar in Los Angeles tightens faster than most homeowners expect. By the second week of September, our install team is booking into November for anything involving custom drapery, and specialty fabrics ordered from Belgium or Italy stretch beyond that. Projects that need to be finished before the holidays are being scheduled right now.

If motorized shading, sunscreen protection, custom drapery, or Ketra lighting is part of your fall plan, this is the month to have the conversation. We handle the design consultation, measurements, coordination with the general contractor, and Lutron programming under one roof, which means a single point of contact from the first sample review through the final walkthrough.

When a shade is built into the architecture rather than hung in front of it, the entire room changes. The ceiling stays clean, the window trim reads exactly as the architect intended, and nothing about the fabric or hardware competes with the finishes underneath.
The Lutron motorized shades in this video are recessed into a plaster-in ceiling pocket, coordinated with the framing during construction. When they are open you cannot see them. When they are closed the fabric drops in one continuous plane against the window. This is the level of detail that separates a house from a home that still photographs beautifully ten years after it was finished.

August in Los Angeles has a very specific problem. The sun sits at exactly the wrong angle for the patio you spent the winter designing, the glare hits the seating area at four, and by the time golden hour arrives everyone has migrated back inside.
A custom motorized awning is the piece of hardware that solves this. Extended when you need shade over lunch and cocktails, retracted after sunset so the coast or the canyon comes back into view. Custom-fit to the exact dimensions of your space, wired to a keypad you can reach without getting up, and built to last a decade of LA summers.

One month of summer left. Worth using it well.
