I found a small harbor between Tacoma and Seattle where a handful of lapstrake boats rose and fell with the tides. Above a stand of pale trunks, a floating canopy of color folds into a soft, celebratory hush. I imagined Umbrellandia: The Wedding as a place where bright panels drift overhead and two quieter umbrellas, Canopy Carl and Ella Brella, rest close together below. I discovered a small shop in Kjerringøy beneath a wide North Atlantic sky. A genial shopkeeper leaned on the counter and I walked away with a blue cable-knit cap and a magenta one for our daughter. Sunlit shelves of enamelware, tins, woven baskets and pale ceramics felt lived-in and carefully kept, a quiet hospitality that makes ordinary things feel important. This is Dale Chihuly's Crystal Towers, triple columns that anchor the walkway from dockside along Tacoma's Commencement Bay to the Chihuly Glass Museum. I’m drawn to how the forms feel both planted and ascending, organic yet architectural, quietly monumental against the city. Two bridges meet over the Mississippi, their opposite curves threading a weather-worn sky and the river’s dark hurry. I shot this on our anniversary in LaCrosse in 2009 and chose sepia to reduce the image to its essence of power and movement. Barges and towboats move like a steady industry while a necklace of cottages on the far shore hints at summers of swimming and winters of ice fishing. I’ve canoed the wild rice edges where the current slows, and that quiet, stubborn life sits beside the river’s steady work.
