This work began with the physical memory of sitting beside the ocean on a pebbled beach—the mineral color of the water, salt on the skin, and the temporary impressions the stones leave across your thighs. I am interested in the moment a place registers through the body before it becomes memory.

The velvet is pressed, brushed, and pigmented so that its surface continually changes with the light. Marks emerge, recede, and reform as the viewer moves, holding the image somewhere between landscape and afterimage. Rather than depicting the ocean literally, the painting preserves its residue: color, touch, awe, and the fleeting evidence of having been there.

Life in the studio lately.

This body of work considers the intangibility and impermeability of memory—how a landscape, a quality of light, or a field of color can remain vivid while resisting complete retrieval.

Powdered pigment is worked directly into silk velvet, allowing the image to emerge through the material rather than simply rest on its surface. As the velvet responds to light, movement, and proximity, each painting shifts between clarity and dissolution, becoming less a fixed representation than a changing perceptual encounter.

The work exists somewhere between painting, textile, relief, and atmosphere: an attempt to give physical form to what can be sensed, but never fully recovered.

This feels like the most honest work I’ve made in my lifetime. I have spent so much of my life being capable, resilient, and self-contained—often because I had to be. But I never want strength to harden me or make me less available to beauty, intimacy, and feeling.

Tender comes from that tension: the desire to remain soft after disappointment, to stay open without abandoning discernment, and to let grief, longing, pleasure, and hope exist in the same place. Something has unlocked in my heart, and the work feels closer to me than ever.

A Mutual Exhale

This piece feels like the moment after holding your breath for too long. A soft release. A shared surrender. The kind of pause where two forces stop resisting each other and finally meet in stillness.

Lately, I’ve been moving through my own version of that exhale. After being uprooted, leaving Mexico City, and returning to the U.S. without any clear map for what comes next, I’ve been sitting inside a lot of uncertainty.

I don’t know exactly where I’m landing yet. I don’t know what shape this next chapter is taking.

But I do know this: my practice is the ground beneath me.

When everything else feels unresolved, the work gives me a place to return. A rhythm. A language. A purpose. A way to keep translating the experience of being alive into something tangible, textural, and held.
