25 years ago I moved to LA chasing the newest architecture in the city. 🏛️

I never expected the OLD buildings to be the ones that stole my heart.

Somewhere along the way, historic preservation became one of my favorite parts of this job. Not because it’s easy — because it’s a puzzle. How do you take a building that already has a story and give it another 50 years of life?

🔹 M Georgina at ROW DTLA
🔹 Lustig, inside the historic Helms Bakery
🔹 The Variety Arts Theater
🔹 The Los Angeles Theatre + Orpheum, with Summit Series
🔹 And now — the United Artists Theatre for Sharon Marie Harvey

These buildings mattered to LA the day they opened. My job is to make sure they still do.

Designing for Community at Work

As I’ve spent more time thinking about remote and in‑person work, I’ve realized the real question isn’t where work happens—but why people want to come together at all.
Post‑pandemic, many of us are highly efficient. We focus, get the work done, and move on so that we can also focus on our personal lives. I support that. People need full, healthy lives outside of work.
But as a leader—and as an architect—I’m increasingly aware of what risks being lost when work becomes purely transactional.
Architecture is deeply collaborative. It relies on trust, shared language, mentorship, and learning that happens through working alongside one another. That sense of community doesn’t happen automatically anymore. It has to be intentionally supported.
My role isn’t to pull people away from their lives. It’s to help create a workplace that adds value—to grow community at work and ideally strengthen it beyond the office as well.
Just like the spaces we design, culture requires intention.

So how do we more intentionally design workplaces that nurture community, not just productivity?

NCA Studio turned 13 last week.

It’s a milestone that feels both significant and surprisingly understated. There’s no single moment that defines 13 years—just a steady accumulation of work, relationships, challenges, and growth.

Over that time, we’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects—from the KCRW broadcast facility to the historic Citizen Market, and more recently restaurants such as Sushi Samba and Maydan Market. Each one has brought together different teams, clients, and collaborators, shaping not just the work itself but the way we practice.

This past year, especially, has been a reminder that a studio isn’t defined only by its projects—it’s shaped by the people who carry it forward. The culture you build, and community you develop. The way a team shows up, especially when things don’t go as planned.

I’m grateful for the community around this studio—past and present—and for the opportunity to keep doing work that’s collaborative and creative with truly amazing clients, collaborators, and friends.

We are proud to have worked with the team on the LA debut of , bringing Chef Daisuke Nakazawa’s Michelin-recognized omakase experience to Robertson Boulevard, and adding another layer to the city’s evolving dining landscape.

Great dining starts with the food—but it’s the design architecture that shapes how the experience unfolds.

A great day on site at the Oak Center 🚧

Walking through the project while it’s actively under construction is always a reminder that great design is a team effort. From early concepts to what’s now taking shape in the field, it’s exciting to see this space come to life.

I'm grateful to be alongside such a dedicated group helping bring this vision to reality. This center will serve as a meaningful hub for both youth and seniors in the community, and we’re proud to be part of it.

More to come as we get closer to completion.

Nicole and Georgina visited our Bellflower Youth & Senior Center project this week along with Daniella Carter of , and took part in a memorable beam signing — a milestone that marks how far the building has come and the many hands that took part in shaping it.

The project is making great strides, and it was exciting to see the structure coming together alongside our collaborators and the community.
