We wanted to create a dialog between architecture and nature in this space, so we left the cypress wood boards of the building’s rain-screen intentionally unfinished to allow for the natural aging of the material. The vertical scale and orientation of the boards evoke images of a forest within the city and provide a natural backdrop to the seasonal colors of the fruit-bearing trees.

The cypress rain-screen as a backdrop to the persimmon tree and this glorious wind chime made this already beautiful, peaceful space feel elevated to the next level.

Sound has such a profound way of bringing back vivid memories and shifting a space’s mood and feeling. There is nothing quiet as powerful as a set of wind chimes and a collection of bells to set that mood.

We are thrilled to be working with Chris Kallmyer for an upcoming sound installation experience here at our West Adams project. We look forward to sharing more details about the event soon!

We love the play of light through the cypress rainscreen for the circulation spaces. The idea for the vertical wood rainscreen, as both a privacy screen as well as a light modulator, first started at one of our projects in West Adams over five years ago. By living with the idea for a number of years, we were inspired to evolve the exterior screen to both redirect the second story view toward the garden spaces while also providing sun protection and a playful dance of light through the main circulation space.
