Spring Cleaning: Who can we thank for this tradition?
It’s that time of year again. The days are getting longer, and it’s a good thing too! There is suddenly so much to do around the house, right? Spring cleaning is a popular but time consuming and strenuous tradition. There may be a few explanations as to why we as Americans feel the sudden urge to collectively purge, rearrange and restore our homes from top to bottom come springtime. Now who can we thank for starting this trend?
Well, it’s no myth; winter causes us to be inherently less active and motivated. That’s right; your brain creates melatonin when there is less sunlight on cold dreary days, making you sleepy! Come spring, Mother Nature provides us a natural energy boost by giving us warmer weather and extra sunlight. This is when you’ll notice the cobwebs, the ring around the tub and the dirty, streaky windows.
So now that we know why we’re willing to spend the time and effort cleaning, we can explore the ancient tradition of spring cleaning as an activity that western society has adopted. Spring cleaning was not always how we know it to be today; it began in the Jewish, Iranian and Chinese cultures many centuries ago.
The Jewish tradition came from their regular house cleaning just before Passover; the holiday marking the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. Since matzah, or unleavened bread, was fed to the Jewish slaves in Egypt, it is tradition for Jews to rid their house of any leavened bread during Passover. This is to honor and remember those that had to overcome slavery and oppression by eating foods the Jews consider humble. To ensure all bread has been removed from the house, including crumbs, a full-fledged house cleaning is routinely done each year as to not offend God.
The Iranian New Year, like in most cultures, signifies new beginnings. The ritual, “khooneh takouni” which means “shaking the house” has been a customary activity performed by Iranians looking to turn over a new leaf and refresh their homes. Undergoing a complete house cleaning allows for the New Year to start off on the right foot.
The third group of contributors to the origin of spring cleaning is the Chinese. The Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays in their culture. It is celebrated for weeks, welcoming spring and celebrating good fortune to come. Like Iranians, Chinese mark the coming of a new year with a thorough house cleaning. They sweep, mop and rearrange to rid their homes of any negativity seen in the previous year. They do this to symbolically welcome rebirth in all aspects of their life, hoping to bring good luck in the New Year.

Summer's practically over, and fall will be here before you know it...So here are a few reasons why Fall cleaning is just as important as Spring cleaning:

Clean up before you close up: Before closing up your home for the cold winter months, get in a good deep cleaning to clear out all the dust, dirt, pollen, and muck that’s been accumulating throughout the summer. The last thing you want to do is get stuck inside with all of that for the next few months – especially if you have allergies!

Check and clean the air filters, exhaust fans, and the range hood

Wipe down the blinds, wash the curtains, and clean the ceiling fans, floors, and carpets.

Wash the walls, windows, doors, baseboards, crown moldings, etc.
Get behind and under all the furniture like couches, beds, bookshelves, etc.

Declutter and tidy up: I don’t know about you, but regularly purging our home of unwanted and unused items just makes us feel better! Sell what you can on Craigslist or have a garage sale, donate to a shelter or thrift store, and don’t be afraid to send some stuff straight to the dumpster if you need to. Whatever you choose, getting this done at least twice a year just makes the job that much easier.

Get rid of unwanted guests: Our homes tend to get invaded during the summer and become safe havens for critters like bugs, spiders, flies, etc. Fall cleaning is the perfect time to get into all the crevices around your home and get rid of those guys before hunkering down for the winter.

Vacuum and wipe down all the corners and creases at the ground and ceiling level
Wash the window sills.

Don’t forget the closets!

Prepare the outside: All those pool days, cookouts, and garden work really takes a toll on our homes, so now is the perfect time to clean up, touch up, and get things stored away for the winter.

Wash the windows, and check the gutters for any debris.

Clean and put away patio furniture and kid’s toys, bbq grill; drain and store garden hose, wash trash cans, etc.

Clean and inspect the exterior doorways. Get rid of any critters, spiderwebs, etc. Check the caulking and weather stripping, and replace if necessary.

Cozy up the inside: Pull out the blankets and sweaters, set out some Fall-scented candles, and get your home nice and ready for warm, cozy nights by the fire. Wash the bedding and pillows, flip the mattresses, and clean the upholstery, so everything is clean and fresh.

See? Makes total sense now, right? Fall cleaning really is pretty important!

Give Merlin's Magic a call, I'd be happy to help with all your FALL cleaning needs! 608-477-0608

Most people do their best to tackle a great deal of deep cleaning in regards to their home in the Spring, and it's easy to forget about it's Fall counterpart.

Fall cleaning isn't just about tidying up on a regular schedule (though that's good too), there are health benefits and more. Here are a few reasons why you should hop to!

1. Closing Up Shop: For most of the country, Fall and Winter months mean our houses start to be closed up. Our air conditioners turn to heaters and our windows are closed. When that happens all the dust and dirt in your home stays there. Scary thought right?

2. Good Habit: Creating healthy habits in your home can be tricky. If you aren't the deep clean everyday or even once a month type, doing so twice a year is a good thing. Leaving it all to the Spring makes things seem cumbersome, so add another few weeks of spiffing things up and you'll be better for it.

3. The Holidays are Coming So you like to entertain (or even just enjoy your home solo) through the holidays. Once the time is upon us, it's easy to get overloaded with food and seating. Wouldn't it be nice if you weren't worried about cleaning out the coat closet so guests had somewhere to put their things? Do it now and you'll only have a surface wipe down to tackle down the line.

4. Built in Purge Time: We live by the thought of only having around you what you love. By going through your things twice a year, it's an easy reminder to yourself to get busy using something or putting it on Craigslist in 6 months when cleaning time rolls around again. By waiting a full year to do this process you spend more time in a space with things you don't love or use and who wants that?

5. Inspection: Going into the winter months all sorts of things like to call your home their home. Spiders, bugs, moths, none of which you really want to bunk down with. By deep cleaning during the Fall you get a chance to see who's hiding where and giving them a squish or kick to the curb before they start snacking on you or your clothes.

Now's the time to get those FALL windows cleaned! Let Merlin's Magic help. September and October fill up fast, so give me a call 608-477-0608!

Small town news spreads fast, so as I'm sure most of you have already heard, I am having triple bypass surgery on December 7th at the UW Hospital. Winter is generally my off season for window washing so I will be doing estimates and getting work lined up for Spring over the next few weeks leading up to my procedure (give me a call, I'll be happy to get you a free estimate!). No worries, by the time the weather warms and Spring is officially here, I will be as good as new and Merlin's Magic Window Cleaning will be ready willing and able to take care of all your window washing needs! Happy Holidays

Every local community has a story, a history, and a unique personality that cannot be replicated. This is often thanks to specialized, small-scale businesses, like this one, which contribute to a neighborhood’s distinctive character and promote a thriving ecosystem in their community. Small, independent businesses offer diverse products and services, fostering economic resilience by removing the local economy’s dependence on a single industry. When you buy local, you build local, and deepen your connection to your own community.

As a result, patronizing a local business like this is an act of community building.

Did You Know?

*48 cents of every dollar spent at a locally owned retail business goes back into the local community. That’s more than three times the amount that local economies recover from chain retailers — Civic Economics’ 2012 survey of local businesses

*Local businesses have generated 65% of the country’s net new jobs over the past 17 years — US Small Business Administration

I guess it's official... I've got business cards. :)
