Moving the kitchen to the north side of the house was the decision that unlocked this whole remodel. The original kitchen sat dead center in the home, closed off on all four sides from the daylight, the views, and a big deck it had no way to reach. Now a ten-foot folding door opens the room straight onto that deck, and on a warm afternoon the kitchen runs right out into the backyard. The island holds the sink, the dishwasher, and the seating, which means it’s also where everyone ends up. Behind it, a walk-in pantry adds more than fifty linear feet of storage the cabinetry never could have held.

This mid-century kitchen, dining room, and powder bath in Golden are all sized off the same measurement: the space between the original ceiling beams. Decades of well-meaning remodels had piled up inside this house until the architecture was hard to see. We peeled those layers back and let the beam rhythm decide where everything goes, from the walls of the new powder bath to the length of the island. Swipe through the main level, and keep going to the last slide to meet the one who supervised the whole project. If your house has good bones buried under a few too many updates, save this one for later.

We are so honored! Our amazingly talented Ashley Christensen took the 1st Runner Up award for Designer of the Year from Interior Design Society. We had an incredible time in Las Vegas this year with industry friends old and new. As always, we are overflowing with gratitude for the recognition and support of the work we love so very much.

This was a sad little ensuite with a layout that made no sense, and it is the before and after we are most proud of in this whole house.

We rebuilt the plan from scratch instead of working around what was there, which is almost always the right call when a bathroom feels wrong and nobody can say exactly why. Clean lines, real moments of contrast, mixed metals, and a window big enough to deserve the entire wall it sits on.

The black and white floor geometry ties back to the accents in the bedroom next door, so the suite reads as one thought rather than two rooms that happen to share a door.

Guests get a bathroom that makes a quiet case for staying an extra night.

Upstairs in this guest bedroom, we wanted the house to change its mind.

The main level is bright and busy and full of color. The second floor drops the tone into something quieter and more saturated, so the guest suite feels like a different hour of the day entirely.

The headboard wall gets geometric wallpaper panels with custom trim framing each one. Pattern still shows up in this room, it just behaves differently. That black and white geometry reappears through the suite and into the bath, which is the detail we keep returning to.

Then there is the ceiling. The camel warms all that cool navy, and that contrast is the only reason the room reads as sultry instead of cold. A painted ceiling is one of the least expensive and most underused moves available in a renovation.

We fell for this tile before we had made a single other decision, and then designed the rest of the bathroom around it.

This room replaced the bathroom we pulled out of the dining room, so it now serves the whole main level from a little hall off the kitchen. A large shower with a ledge, a vanity with real storage, and lighting that works for the person actually standing at the mirror.

The leaf mural carries the green running through the rest of the house. The black and white hex on the floor keeps the whole thing from tipping over into theme.

Every room in this home is its own piece of art. This one just happens to be the one you find by accident.

At some point in this house’s life, an evil-doer put a bathroom in the dining room.

Half the usable square footage, gone. What was left worked as a gallery you passed through on the way somewhere else, not a room anybody stayed in.

We gave that bathroom a proper home off the kitchen hall and gave the dining room its space back. It seats eight now, and it has turned into the room everyone ends up in.

The floral mural is the loudest thing in this house and it has earned the right to be. Custom paneling and trim frame it. We also ran a picture rail a few inches below the crown molding, partly for the detail and partly so art can hang without anyone putting a nail through that wallpaper.

French doors open to the patio, so the light and the cross breeze do plenty of work in here too.

Our clients needed somewhere to put a book collection they have been building for decades, and the blank wall in their living room had been doing nothing for anyone.

Open shelves above, closed cabinets below. The games and the overflow disappear, the books stay out where they belong. Then we used the depth of the cabinetry to build a real entry into the dining room. Walking through it, the books close in around you for a second before the next room opens up. It is our favorite few feet in this house.

The yellow was the last color we chose on this whole project. It pulls from the yellow in the kitchen tile and pushes against the deep tones waiting on the other side of that doorway.

We wanted an old world library without the gloom that usually comes with one. This one asks you to actually read the books.

A long rectangular room is one of the most common layout problems we get asked about, and our clients had been losing to this one for years.

So we stopped fighting the shape and used it. Two conversation areas, one at each end, with the purple daybed sitting right in the middle of everything. On a quiet night it is the best seat in the house for the fire. When they are entertaining it splits the room into two groups who can still talk across it.

The palette in here borrows from the dining room next door so the two rooms feel related rather than separate. The brass coffee table answers the brass range hood in the kitchen. The yellow from the bookcases carries all the way through the base, the case, the crown, the doors, and the rick rack detail on the drapery.

If a room has been fighting you for years, it is usually the layout and not the furniture. What is the room you keep rearranging and still do not like?

Every outside edge on this fireplace is mitered. If you know tile, you just felt something. The home’s original fireplace disappeared long before our clients bought the house, and what stood in its place was a heavy wooden surround taking up more of the room than it earned. Pulling it out gave us a rare thing in a historic house: permission to invent. The tile is one by eighteen inches, set in a one third pattern so it reads as soft horizontal banding instead of a grid. The curved corners keep all that pink from getting loud. It stays sophisticated. The art TV sits on an articulating arm that folds back into a recess behind it. That lets it rest flush against the tile and behave like a piece of art rather than a television. Design, engineering, carpentry, and tile installation all had to agree for this to come together. It still makes our hearts skip a little.
