Oh, these Dog Days of Summer can be rough. Our two schnauzers (plus their friend) seem to think the best way to celebrate is by stretching out in the hottest patch of sunshine they can find. ☀️🐾

Meanwhile, I'm over here celebrating the shade and air-conditioning.

Despite the name, the Dog Days aren't actually about dogs—they're the sultry stretch of summer, from July 3 through August 11, when the star Sirius, the "Dog Star," rises and falls in conjunction with the sun.

Around here, it simply means HOT and HUMID.

Maybe that's nature's way of giving us permission to slow down, seek a little shade, and take life at a gentler pace. Just ask these sunbathing dogs.

I love watching Black-eyed Susans wake up. Before the flower fully opens, the petals unfurl one by one, slowly stretching away from the center. It reminds me of a sleepy baby opening its tiny fist after a nap.

Nature rarely hurries. Every bloom has its own rhythm, revealing itself a little at a time.

While working on my next novel, I remind myself we aren't expected to be and do everything at once. Sometimes one petal at a time, one page at a time, is exactly the right pace. 🌼

Half the year is already behind us. 🌿

Today I’m catching up on my backyard phenology journal. Can you believe July is half over? The YEAR is half over!?

Flipping through six months of tiny observations—first blooms, returning birds, butterflies, dragonflies, seed heads, summer storms, and all the quiet moments I would have forgotten if I hadn’t written them down.

Phenology has taught me that life isn’t measured only by the big milestones. Sometimes it’s found in the first lightning bug of the season, a goldfinch turning bright yellow, or the day the cicadas finally begin to sing.

I noticed this dagger moth caterpillar (Acronicta americana) while walking the dogs this morning. I called these wooly worms when I was a kid (and still do). If you see one of these beautiful creatures, don’t handle them. Those black spikes will sting. (I relocated him from the sidewalk using a stick).

Like many of you, I carry both gratitude and concern in my heart this Fourth of July. I celebrate the beauty of this land, the freedoms we enjoy, and the ordinary people who continue showing up with kindness, generosity, and hope.

Loving a country doesn't require pretending it's perfect. Sometimes love means believing we can do better while remaining thankful for all that has come before.
