This transformation began last fall when we installed this patio and grill spot. Then we came back this spring for the planting. The homeowners wanted a low maintenance plan with variations of green throughout the garden. We custom cut the edge of the patio to give it a natural look like cottage flagstone.

Today I had a visitor I’ve been hoping to see for years — a Giant Swallowtail butterfly.

This is the largest butterfly in North America, and its caterpillars depend on plants in the citrus family. In Kentucky, their host plants include our native wafer ash (Ptelea trifoliata) and northern prickly ash (Zanthoxylum americanum), and they will also use citrus plants grown in pots.

A few years ago, I grew a wafer ash from seed. I now have one planted in my yard and a few more growing in pots. And today, in the middle of a suburb… the butterfly found it.

I’ve never seen one here before, but I planted that tree with the hope that someday it would support wildlife.
And today, it was here laying eggs.

The homeowners love their new patio and grilling space! The patio will be completed with a sealer when the weather allows. The next phase on thid project will be a pavilion and the garden beds around the patio.
