Two Beautiful Trees Looking for a Permanent Home!

I have two trees for sale, and I have to admit, it’s going to be hard to part with them! I’ve enjoyed growing and caring for both, but it’s time for them to find a permanent place in the landscape.

Eastern Hemlock – $125
Approximately 5 feet tall with a beautiful, graceful growth habit. I absolutely love this tree! Hemlocks are wonderful native evergreens with soft, delicate foliage and a natural, elegant appearance.

Dawn Redwood – $100
Approximately 7 feet tall. This one is especially dear to me because I’ve grown it from a tiny seedling! Dawn redwoods are magnificent, fast-growing trees with feathery foliage that turns a beautiful coppery bronze in autumn before dropping for winter.

Unfortunately, with the transmission lines running through my yard, I simply don’t have the space to plant these trees where they can grow to their full potential.

Fall is a wonderful time to plant trees, and I’d love to see these two find good homes where they can thrive for many years to come.

This project was a complete hardscape makeover, and we’re so excited to share the before-and-after photos!

One of the biggest challenges was a large, mature maple tree whose roots were compromising the existing retaining wall. We worked with a professional arborist to evaluate whether the tree could be saved while safely rebuilding the wall. Unfortunately, after exploring our options, we determined that removing the tree was necessary to avoid compromising both the tree’s stability and the integrity of the new wall.

With that difficult decision behind us, we were able to move forward with a complete transformation, including new stone retaining walls, steps, a paver walkway, concrete sidewalks, and drainage improvements.

A huge thank-you to my contractor for making this project happen! This was no small undertaking, and we’re incredibly appreciative of the craftsmanship, problem-solving, and hard work that went into bringing everything together.

And we’re not finished yet! The next phase is the garden! We’re looking forward to bringing plants and life back into this space to complement all the beautiful stonework.

Planning a landscape project for 2027? Now is a great time to get on my design schedule.

My fall and winter design schedule is beginning to fill. My larger design project for October is booked, but I still have room for a couple of smaller design projects. I am currently open for both larger and smaller design projects beginning in November.

Going forward, I’ll be scheduling approximately one larger-scale landscape design project per month, along with a limited number of smaller projects. This allows me to give larger projects the time they need while still having room for smaller design services throughout the month.

Larger projects may include detailed landscape designs covering several areas of a property or a full property master plan.

Smaller projects may include a Plant Palette, Concept Plan, or a detailed design for an individual garden area.

Why am I encouraging you to contact me now?

March, April and May are typically when I receive the most calls for new landscape designs. I still accept design projects during the spring, but they are added to my schedule as openings allow.

Signing up for a design in April or May does not necessarily mean I will be able to begin your design right away. Depending on how many projects are already in the queue, someone contacting me in May could potentially be looking at a design start later in the summer or even into September.

If you would also like EARTHeim to install your finished design, waiting until spring to begin the design process can also affect whether we have room for the installation that same season. It may still be possible, depending on the project and our schedule, but I cannot guarantee installation timing.

Fall and winter are my primary months for design work. There is less planting work happening outdoors, which gives me more time to focus on designs. If your project includes hardscape or drainage work, we may also be able to get a head start on those portions during the non-planting months, depending on the weather and site conditions.

Our primary planting season begins in early to mid-May, so getting the design process underway during fall and winter can put you in a much better position when planting season arrives.

Current availability:

October — Larger design project booked; a couple of smaller project openings remain

November and forward — Currently open for larger and smaller design projects

Have you heard of a “soft landing”? 🌳🍂

Soft landings are one of the ecological design practices we consider at EARTHeim.

Instead of maintaining lawn right up to the trunk of a tree, we can create a planted garden beneath and around it using native plants along with fallen leaves and other natural plant material.

Why?

The space beneath a tree is an important part of its ecosystem. Many caterpillars feed in the canopy and later drop to the ground, where they need leaf litter or soil to complete another stage of their life cycle. Leaf litter and planted areas beneath trees can also provide habitat for fireflies and many other beneficial insects.

And those insects are an important part of the food web—including food for birds.

A soft landing can also be beautiful. Woodland wildflowers, groundcovers, ferns and other shade-tolerant native plants can turn difficult-to-mow areas beneath trees into intentional garden spaces with seasonal color and texture.

It’s one example of how we approach landscape design at EARTHeim: looking beyond how a landscape looks and considering how it functions as habitat, too.

Thinking about landscaping next spring? Don’t wait until spring to start your design!

I’m beginning to schedule my fall and winter landscape design queue, with openings anticipated for new design work beginning in October

Every year, most people contact me about landscape design in March, April and May. But if you’re hoping to have your project installed in spring or early summer, that may be much later than you realize to begin the process.

My biggest months for focusing on new landscape designs are:

OCTOBER • NOVEMBER • DECEMBER • JANUARY • FEBRUARY

What happens when you contact EARTHeim?

1. We schedule a consultation and site visit.
We’ll walk your property, discuss what you’d like to accomplish, and look at the opportunities and challenges of your site.

2. I prepare a design proposal.
If you’d like to move forward after the consultation, I’ll prepare a proposal based on the scope of design work you need.

3. We begin the design process.
Once the proposal is accepted, we’ll collaborate to develop the design for your property.

4. Interested in installation, too?
After we’ve worked through the design and established the scope of the project, an installation estimate can be prepared. A Detailed Landscape Design Plan is required for projects EARTHeim will implement.

I’ve also expanded my design services for homeowners who may want to implement their own projects. Depending on how much guidance you need, options range from a **Plant Palette** or **Concept Visualization** to a **Detailed Landscape Design Plan** or a larger **Property Master Plan**.

So whether you’re looking for professional guidance for a DIY garden or want EARTHeim to design and implement your project, we can determine the appropriate level of design help during your consultation.

Why start now?

Planting season generally begins in early to mid-May, and March through May are some of the busiest months of my year. I still take new design inquiries during the spring, but wait times to begin a design — and subsequently schedule an installation — are typically longer.

If you contact me in May, we may still have time to design and install your project that season, depending on the project and our schedule. But I can’t guarantee it. Larger projects or projects started later in the spring may be scheduled for summer or late summer.

Starting the conversation this fall gives us more time to thoughtfully plan your project and gives you greater flexibility when it comes time to schedule the work.

We enjoyed visiting the Pulaski County Extension Office today to help with their Master Gardener demonstration gardens!

EARTHeim loves working with local organizations and being part of community projects throughout Kentucky. It was a great day talking plants, gardens, and ideas for the demonstration gardens!

The Market Stand is where I share the things I grow, make and collect throughout the seasons, this weekend there’s quite a mix.

I have a couple dozen of potted plants available, and most are only $1, with just a few priced at $2, $3 or $5. These are extra plants that I’d much rather see find a place in someone’s garden!

• Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) — Kentucky native with beautiful blue flowers and great pollinator value

• Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) — fragrant perennial with purple flower spikes loved by pollinators
• Native Strawberry — low-growing native groundcover

• Plus a few mixed pots with Great Blue Lobelia paired with other plants

🌸 This weekend at the Market Stand: I’ll also have my garden-grown fresh cut flowers, including several arrangements in vintage vases, along with an assortment of inexpensive vintage finds.

🍊 And I’ve been making something new for fall — garden simmering potpourri using materials from my garden along with dried orange and cinnamon. They’re little one-use mixes to add to water and gently simmer for a cozy seasonal scent.

The Market Stand gives me a place to share another side of what I love — growing plants and flowers, crafting, reusing interesting old pieces, and seeing good things find a new home.
