There’s something different about starting the day under a full moon.

Before the crews arrived and before the docks came alive at the Youngstown Yacht Club, we were already gearing up and getting into the water, working our way down the boat line, inspecting hulls, clearing debris, and making sure our customers were ready for another day of J/111 racing.

By the time the sailors started showing up, our work below the surface was nearly finished. There’s a lot of satisfaction in climbing out of the water knowing that the work nobody sees may have played a small part in someone’s success out on the lake.

Early mornings. Cold water. Quiet docks. Do the job right, and let the results speak for themselves.

“I Get It.”

This morning, before the first splash of the day at the J/111 National Championships in Youngstown, I arrived early enough to watch the sun rise over the water. The river and lake were perfectly still, no boats moving, no crowds, no noise. Just me, my dive gear, and the water.

As I stood there taking in the quiet beauty of God’s creation, one simple thought came to mind:

“I get it.”

I get why sailors are drawn to the water. Why divers find peace beneath it. Why so many of us keep coming back to it.

Some mornings remind you that the work is about more than the job. Every once in a while, you’re fortunate enough to have a front-row seat to something much bigger than yourself.

“Leadership Lessons From the Other Side of the Water.”

Most days, EJS Great Lakes Dive Solutions sees boats from underneath the waterline. This time, I had the opportunity to be on top of the boat—crewing a J/111 for my first sailboat race.

What an experience.

Sailing is an incredible example of teamwork and leadership in action. Everyone has a role, communication matters, and you have to trust the people around you. You listen, learn quickly, accept correction, and sometimes develop a little thick skin. There isn’t much room for ego when the conditions are changing and the entire crew is working toward the same goal.

What struck me most was the connection between the crew, the boat, the wind, and the water. You don’t control the conditions, you read them, adapt to them, and work together through them. Leadership isn’t much different.

And for my first race, we won.

More important than the win was being welcomed by a crew willing to teach me and share something they’re passionate about. Thank you for accepting the rookie and giving me an experience I won’t forget.

Sometimes leadership means being the experienced one. Other times, it means being willing to become the student again.

Building this business has never been just about diving; it’s about people, experiences, teamwork, and always staying curious about what lies beyond the next horizon.

That spirit was inspired in part by Anthony Bourdain’s book, Kitchen Confidential. His respect for hard work, different cultures and perspectives, strong teams, and living life with curiosity has stayed with me throughout my own journey into entrepreneurship. Keep exploring. Keep learning. Respect the people beside you, and never lose your curiosity.
