Flying V Electric recently upgraded a customer’s outdoor soffit lighting after their previous lights failed after a short period of time.

This customer is remodeling their new home and wanted to make the living room brighter and more functional. The space didn’t have any overhead lighting or a ceiling fan.

Here’s a look at an older electrical system featuring a Square D panel and cloth-insulated wiring.

Cloth wiring was a common method of wiring homes before the insulated conductors we use today became standard. While some older cloth wiring can remain serviceable, age, heat, moisture, and previous electrical work can all affect the condition of the insulation.

That’s why an inspection is important when dealing with an older electrical system. It’s not just about how the panel looks — it’s about what’s happening throughout the system, from the panel to the outlets and everything in between.

⚠️ Another hidden electrical hazard found ⚠️

Flying V Electric was called out to troubleshoot several non-working outlets after the homeowner reported hearing popping and sizzling noises whenever an appliance was plugged in.

During our inspection, we found an outlet with visible discoloration on the faceplate. After removing the outlet, we discovered severely burned wiring. Further investigation revealed that the outlet had been incorrectly wired during a previous installation, creating loose connections that led to excessive heat and electrical arcing.

This is a great reminder that even something as simple as replacing or wiring an outlet can become a serious fire hazard if it’s not done correctly.

If you’ve noticed buzzing, popping, sizzling sounds, warm outlets, discoloration, or outlets that stop working, don’t ignore the warning signs. Having the issue inspected by a licensed electrician can help prevent costly damage and keep your home safe.
