Typically electrical terms are counter-intuitive. For example, a common electric motor has a start and run winding. It can have a start and run capacitor, too. You would expect the run winding to be powered by the run capacitor, but the run capacitor is always on the start winding. Electrical equipment is sometimes hard to understand. Good thing Hedrick Electric is here to help.

It's time for crazy weather. If you have to switch your thermostat from heat to cool everyday, consider upgrading to the ease and comfort of a thermostat with automatic changeover. We can help with that.

02/10/2016

ALERT: VERY COLD temperatures are arriving soon. If you use a HEAT PUMP, follow this advice to ensure comfort and mitigate cost:
1. Do not turn your thermostat up and down. Leave it at one temperature. It is easier for your unit to maintain a temperature than to raise the temperature.
2. Don't switch to "emergency heat". The heat pump will still work in the cold. Use emergency heat if the unit begins to completely ice up or if snow is obstructing it.
3. Check/change your filter. Clogged filters are the main cause of failures.

Stay warm!

If you have a heat pump (unit beside you house) for heat, make sure to clear the snow from it to avoid a failure.

After an old GFCI receptacle went bad, we discovered that two separate circuits were feeding one receptacle. This accidentally occurred when a different electrician remodeled an area of the house. We capped off one circuit and used the other. This is another example of why you should use the pros at Hedrick Hedrick Electric Service Inc.

An HVAC upgrade for an important customer.

We installed a new return duct above a wood stove so that the warm air would distribute throughout the house. We also cleaned the evaporator coils to ensure no restriction of airflow or mold. The other end of the house now stays warm. The customer is very happy.

You can determine the cost per hour to run anything in your house. Look on your electric bill for the watt/hour charge. Look on the appliance or bulb for the wattage. Watt/hr x wattage = cost per hour. $0.02/hr x 60 watts = $1.20/hr

Are you getting the most from your lamps?

You may have a lamp that can use a 3-way bulb. Look at the label above the switch one the lamp; if it says "use 3-way bulb max 100 watt" then you can buy and use 3-way bulbs to better light your home.

A well lighted home is very comfortable. Multiple low candela (light output) light fixtures reduce shadows and glare. Recessed lights on a dimmer are most effective. Lamps with 3 way bulbs are nearly as good.

Do you like electricity? Forget Ben Franklin. Tesla spent his whole life experimenting with electricity. He is the main reason we have long-distance power transmission and radio.

12/01/2012

Do you have incandescent bulbs that you don't use but you don't want to throw them away? Use them during the winter. The bulbs are basically little heaters that produce light. When spring comes switch to lights that run cooler like CFLs or LEDs.

LED light bulbs are the light bulbs of the future. LEDs are more efficient, last longer, and are better for the environment than compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). LEDs have a large cost up front, but they do pay for themselves in energy savings.

One of the best qualities of LED lights is that you can increase the light output of a fixture. If a fixture is limited to 40 watts, you can install an LED that uses 20 watts and is three times as bright! Triple brightness for half the energy cost!

This website allows you to view the various styles of LED bulbs with quick facts when you scroll over the pictures.
