We are so excited to celebrate with all of the IIBEC Lyons and Newlan Scholarship Winners announced today but we are ESPECIALLY excited to celebrate our Summer Intern MICHELLE, who is one of the recipients of the Lyons Scholarship!
The Lyons scholarship is specifically for undergraduate education expenses for students studying construction sciences, architecture, or engineering.
Congrats Michelle! We personally don't think there's anyone more deserving! (if we may say so ourselves! So happy to have you on board this summer!)
In today's edition of "Oh the places BEC goes" our Senior Project Manager Julie was all over the U.S. this week!

We go to some pretty neat places!
Our Testing Project Manager Robby and our Principal Mike have had much worse days than today. Today our Water Spray Testing brought us to beautiful Napa, California!
We are open and fully operational once again from our new location!
How many breaches will we find today? What's your guess?

What better way to cap off Women in Construction Week than by highlighting the women who help make our dreams a reality here at BEC on International Women's Day!
While our business is small, we are mighty and we would be remiss if we didn't attribute much of that success to the strength and knowledge that our Senior Project Manager, Julie and our Project Administrator, Gerri bring to the table each and every day.
So today, and every day, we are shouting THANK YOU from the roof tops, from DC to Denver. Thank you for your years of hard work and dedication to making our business the success that it is.

Another beautiful, sunny, and dry day - another Electronic Leak Detection test!
Here we see one of our techs, Indolfo, performing the test. At the time this picture was taken we had already identified more than 90 potential penetrations! No wonder there were so many leaks!
Looks can be deceiving!
Here's we see our Project Manager Robby performing an ELD (Electronic Leak Detection) test on the horizontal, sloped, and vertical surfaces of this NEW TPO membrane.
To the naked eye, everything seemed ok but thanks to our ELD test, we were able to identify 119 punctures in the membrane! This test saved this client from big repairs down the road.
Our work brings us to some really beautiful places.
Pictured here are our Principal, Mike, and our Project Manager, Robby, on a roof in Upper Georgetown DC performing a Condition Assessment and Water Infiltration Test (test not pictured).
It’s chilly but make hay (or install roofing) while the sun shines we always say!!

RCI Foundation is so important to the future of our industry because through donations, provides scholarships for students in relevant fields of study to attend our industry events and educational programs. Last year, RCIF provided scholarships to 25 students to attend the annual Convention. One of those students became our summer intern and we hope a full time employee. Your donation will make a difference to a student - but one day will also benefit you! I encourage my peers to support RCIF by making a donation at: http://www.rcifoundation.org/donate.aspx
Be sure to select from the pull-down menu (Any Available Programs) and select the fund or funds you wish to support.
Our greatest need are the RCI Convention / Student Participation Fund and Lou Newlan Education Fund.

Just a little construction/engineering humor to brighten your day....
Even our Office Manager is out in the field today! Hands-on learning, head in the ceiling.

BEC had the honor of an invitation to the 22 M Street|RESA topping out ceremony today! We have been involved as the building envelope design consultant since 2014. It’s amazing to finally see the building in three dimensions. We’ve got a long way to go still with precast, windows, balcony coatings and roof systems. Congratulations to Skanska Commercial Development, Skanska USA Building and Design Collective, Inc!
Today Julie McDonald saw the most amazing construction site equipment ever! A safety equipment vending machine! Think of how game changing this is to provide contractors with the on-site ability to purchase their own personal protective equipment and tools. It is more or less the same price than to go to the hardware store and pick items up but the convenience is immeasurable. Our client Skanska USB is most definitely a leader in safety culture!!!

Water infiltration investigation today. Existing building less than one year old. Challenging difficult to access multi-layered assembly. Will we solve it?
Flying in or Orlando, FL today, I noticed all the blue tarps on roofs. Coming from another part of the country, it’s easy to forget that there is still a lot of recovery going on in the south and hurricane affected areas. One cannot lose sight of the fact that there are predatory “roofers” out there. Licensing restrictions have been temporarily lifted in Florida to aid the recovery efforts but you still need to do your homework and hire qualified roofers for your repair work. Prayers to those affected by the hurricanes now that I’m seeing it firsthand. 🙏🏻
We are looking forward to joining our peers at the RCI Building Envelope Symposium in Orlando, Florida November 12-14. Education, networking and emersion into our passion - building envelope design and science. Don't forget to stop by the hotel lobby bar where Julie McDonald will be hosting an informal networking social on behalf of the Emerging Professionals Committee.
BEC is proud to share this article posted yesterday on the RCI, Inc. NewsPosts. It was championed by our friend Jennifer Hogan of Pretium Anderson Building Engineers of Ontario, Canada. Jennifer is a contributing member of the RCI Emerging Professionals Committee. Our Project Manager, Julie McDonald is presently serving at the Committee Chairman. The Emerging Professionals Committee strives to recruit students entering the field from architecture, engineering or construction related collegiate programs and retaining talented young professionals in the field of building envelope consulting within 10 years of beginning their careers.

BEC attends 32nd Annual RCI Convention
Building Envelope Consulting, LLC (BEC) attended the 32nd Annual RCI Convention in Anaheim, California this March. What a whirlwind of networking,
BEC attended the 32nd annual RCI Convention in Anaheim, California this month. RCI Foundation works diligently to raise funds to promote the building envelope industry. One of their initiatives is to provide all-expenses-paid scholarships to college students in the fields of construction management, architecture and engineering to attend the convention and learn about the building envelope. Some students even receive college credit for their attendance. We were so thrilled to have 29 students attend this year!!! Mike and Julie mentored two construction science students from University of Oklahoma and reconnected with several students who were attending Convention for the second time. Here is a photo of some of the students and our good friend Dr. Elizabeth Grant of Virginia Tech. What an amazing experience for both the students and the professional attendees.
