Concept to completion. Now to make one for our house!
Thatâs a 4 foot wide exhaust hoodâŠâŠâŠ.canât wait to see what the chef has in store for that cooktop!
Removing the built in pantry and replacing it with a cabinet pantry saves so much room in this kitchen. Also with roll outs, the inside of the pantry is so much more efficient now. The last tall cabinet will be storage for brooms and vacuums, taller items you want to be able to grab quickly but keep stored out of sight.
To all my fellow Village Green neighbors with a Kingston 2 model our next project will be tearing out the kitchen and in its place installing a true chefs kitchen. We also will be removing the pantry and cabinets will be installed in its place.
We are in the process of taking down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room in a Chelsea and we can not wait to show that off. Itâs taking open concept to a entirely new level!
Hoping that by this time next week, we will have this hood up. This kitchen has a black island with the remaining cabinets painted white. This hood is black though and will easily become the focal point of the kitchen. Canât wait! Have a great weekend everyone!
A little design vs. reality. (Not done yet of course)
What a difference a week makes! Passed all close in inspections and ready to get the drywall finished. Taking down a wall to open up a space will always be our most favorite part of a project. We can not wait to show the final results of this kitchen build.
We had a couple issues with this set up. First, itâs an island cabinet that had to be taller than a standard base. So we started with a 42 inch upper cabinet. Obviously it needed a drawer. Our manufacturer doesnât make a 12 inch deep lap drawer. So we modified a 24 inch deep lap drawer down to a 12, installed horizontal rails and guides and then installed the in drawer charging outlet. Itâs a great piece that plugs in to an outlet that you can mount behind the drawer. Nice little charging station thatâs off the counter.

Demo day! This is going to be an amazing transformation. Taking a kitchen and dining room and creating one large open space by removing a dividing wall. Stay tuned for updates!
It was a pleasure sponsoring Lucketts Elementary School PTA for this years field day! Fun in the âïž!
When having custom cabinetry built, it's really cool to see how it starts and what it ends up looking like. In this project, we had 2 custom white washed oak cabinets custom made by a local cabinet builder. đ€©đ€©

We designed and built this basement kitchen to best coordinate with their existing tile flooring.

We loooove the basil colored cabinets and how it works really well with the wood island top. The island was custom built to allow flexibility in the space.

We are happy to announce that we are working with HFS Financial to finance your next home remodeling project! Sometimes you donât have the cash, sometimes you do, but you donât want to spend it. In either case, HFS Financial is here to help! No money down on up to $500k and no stage funding! Stage funding is typical with construction loans â the bank has their representative visit the project and decide when you get your next chunk of cash. Thatâs not the case with HFS Financial.
Note: we do not receive any additional compensation or benefits of any kind on a loan that you take with HFS Financial. We are supplying this information as a way to better serve clients who are looking for financing for their project.

Removing a wall does wonders on opening up a space and making it look/feel larger! Look at how it opened up this kitchen we completed. Even though we had to keep parts of the wall in, it completely changed the entire first level of the house.
.

We moved a few things around in this kitchen. The refrigerator was in a pretty inconvenient spot and the cooktop in the island, which isn't seen much anymore. We had our plumber move the gas line to the refrigerator wall and we moved the refrigerator to the left of the island (not seen in this photo). It makes a better flow for kitchen traffic.

One of the bathrooms we remodeled for this sweet couple, was original to the house. We removed the wallpaper and freshened up the rest of the room with new paint, tile, cabinetry, accessories and fixtures!

âWhat are some questions I can ask when interviewing contractors for my projectâ
Here are our top four questions:
â
Are you licensed for the type of work youâll be doing?
Licensing is an important aspect of many industries. In Virginia, you must have a license to be a barber/hair stylist, cosmetologist, tattooist, professional boxer or wrestler, hearing aid specialist, opticianâŠthe list goes on. You must also have a license to be a contractor. This license is NOT just for building structural things, you also have to be licensed to paint, put up wallcoverings, be a tile contractor and even to be a handyman. Licensing protects the consumer, so itâs always important to ask if the contractor is licensed.
â
Which types of insurance do you carry?
The most important types of insurance your contractor must have include: General Liability, which protects your property in the event of an accident, and Workers Compensation, which protects you from liability if someone is hurt while working on your property.
â
Will you obtain all of the required building permits?
Direct replacement projects do not require permitting, but if youâre adding/removing/building electrical, plumbing or structure, your contractor is required to obtain a permit.
â
What is an expected timeline for this project?
By law, itâs required to have an approximate start date and time to complete the project, in the contract with your contractor. Make sure your contract has this information and MOST importantly â make sure there IS a contract. Read it thoroughly and discuss any questions or sections that you may need clarification.
Magic Tricks đȘ
Today, at the very least, let's all commit to making the place we all live, a better one.
Happy Earth Day!
Sometimes butler's pantries are unused. For this renovation, we removed the butler's pantry to incorporate it into the kitchen, adding a thin pantry on one side and a coffee bar on the other. Much more functional and additional usable space.

A day late, but demo is underway on our next bathroom. The overall âfeelâ of this bathroom isnât going to change much, but itâs getting updated with nicer finishes, a better tile job (sorry to the previous owner but corners were cut!) and a shower that I can not wait to share with everyone! Best word to describe the new shower?
Digital.
Same house, same bathroom!
đ€©Sometimes before/after photos are unbelievably different.
đ€©For this master bathroom renovation, we demolished the tub as well as the tile *STAIRS* leading up into the shower. You heard me right, folks, there were stairs going into the shower, which is considered pretty dangerous and against code, in today's rule book.
.
.
.
.
Following every project, we send out a customer satisfaction survey. Here are 3 responses to 1 of the questions.
âĄOften times with contractors, communication and crews are the top issues.
đWe strive to make projects easy on the homeowner because renovations can be tough.
đHaving a contractor that communicates and crews that are clean and respectful are at the TOP of our priority list.
âĄSwipe for the before photo!
đ€·ââïžIf your kitchen has older cabinets with a soffit above them, similar to the before photo from this kitchen remodel we completed, and you're wondering what's in the soffit, we might have an answer for you!
đOften times there's nothing in the soffit. There may be a bit of HVAC or electrical if you have lights in the soffit, but most times there is nothing inside. Why, you ask? Cabinets used to be made shorter than what they are now. To compensate for the shorter upper cabinets, builders would create a soffit above the upper cabinets.
đTaller upper cabinets and soffit removal can totally transform a room! đ
Happy Friday, friends. Have a great Easter weekend! đ°đŁđ
The rough-in for this guest bath was already there. We framed the room, added floor tile, a tub, toilet, a pedestal sink, fixtures and accessories to complete the look.

âQuestion: MW Burke is a Class A contractor. What does that mean? Is class A better than class B or C?
.
â
Answer: Being a licensed contractor means that we are a contractor registered with the state (VA). We have done some serious studying and taken exams on the topics of construction (from code compliance to painting to concrete to safety - and everything in between) AND business (legalities, taxes, hiring, etc.).
The different classes (A, B, C) are different tiers of licensing. Each tier has a contract price limit and requires a certain level of experience to obtain. Contractors pay for licensing and a portion of that payment goes towards a recovery fund to provide homeowners that have incurred losses while using a licensed contractor. It's a layer of protection for the homeowner! In any class, it holds the contractor to an ethical standard.
! We renovated a 90's style master bathroom for this sweet couple in Reston. Professionalism seems to be at the top of the list when we ask clients about our performance. Really happy that professionalism is in the list with polite and clean labor teams. đ„°

đ„°This photo is from 2018 - towards the beginning of MW Burke Inc's life. It's a really important photo because we had just made the large leap from working for others, to working for ourselves. We had to start fresh and study hard to learn how to run a profitable business.
âĄïžWhy do we think this is important for you to know? You ALWAYS want to hire people who run their businesses properly. Project quotes aren't supposed to be an even number, that's negotiable and sent via text message and it's good to know that the people you hand larger sums of money, know how to handle it.
đWhether you're in business for yourself (ANY type of business) or run someone else's, we HIGHLY recommend the book (audio too) Profit First by (read so many of his books, I know how to spell his last name without looking!).
Before and after of a powder room we completed. You can change the feel of any room just by making small changes.

.
.
It's ! You know...one of the many days we appreciate our clients and they appreciate us, back! đ„°
đThis is quite the change and a fan favorite. We have seen an uptick in folks removing tubs and replacing with showers.
â
Pro tip: For resale purposes, it's recommended to have at least 1 tub in your home.
.
.
.
.
On occasion, we will post answers to common questions we receive. If you have a question youâd like answered, feel free to DM us!
.
Question: I want to hire a contractor. How many bids should I get and how do I choose a contractor that is the right fit for me?
.
Answer: Hiring someone for any job (around the house or not), can be confusing and downright overwhelming! Itâs best to get 2-3 bids â and limit it to 3 bids max! Why? The feeling of overwhelm is much greater, the more bids you receive. Information starts to blend together and often times you canât remember who you told what and who you meshed with the best.
.
Finding a good fit starts with the first conversation/interaction you have with who you are interviewing. Make sure you get along and feel comfortable talking to them.
Picking the lowest priced option, is typically not the way to go, for several reasons. Make sure the professional you hire is, in fact, professional including being Licensed by your state. Licensing protects you, the homeowner, from becoming one of those nightmare contractor stories.

That beautiful sound of destruction can only mean one thingâŠâŠdemo day. This will be the second kitchen in a row where we have taken down a wall to open up the space. Being a non-load bearing wall this project is very different than the last. But when a wall comes down, no matter bearing or non load bearing the finished result is always a house with a completely new feel to it.
We started our journey of entrepreneurship together not too long ago, but our industry knowledge and passion go deeper and further back in time.
Matt started woodworking and carpentry as a child and as a career, in 1999. He worked his way from apprentice to lead carpenter, then designer and now Co-Founder and Vice President.
Lisa, on the other hand, is the design and logistical side of the business. Her degree in art and design combined with her love of puzzles and obstacles make her the perfect designer and President of MW Burke.
Matt and Lisa work hand-in-hand on every project along side their team of craftsmen.
