It's - Today I'd like to recognize Beatrix Farrand, a trailblazing landscape architect who made significant contributions to the field and inspired generations of designers. Farrand (1872-1959) was one of the first female practitioners of landscape architecture in the United States and created many iconic gardens, estates, and campuses during her career. Her work combined artistic vision, ecological sensitivity, and technical expertise to shape outdoor spaces that were both beautiful and functional.

One of Farrand's most famous projects is the Dumbarton Oaks garden in Washington, D.C., which she designed from 1921 to 1946. This 10-acre site, owned by Robert and Mildred Bliss, was transformed from a neglected property into a series of outdoor rooms that showcase a variety of plants, textures, and colors. Farrand's design included fountains, pools, terraces, paths, and a kitchen garden, all arranged in a harmonious and elegant way. She also incorporated historical and cultural references, such as Roman and Islamic motifs, as well as modern innovations, such as a water-recycling system and an herbaceous border.

In addition to her private commissions, Farrand was involved in shaping several public spaces, such as the Princeton University campus in New Jersey and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden in Maine. She was a founding member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and the first woman to serve on its executive committee.

Farrand's impact on the field of landscape architecture was significant and lasting. She was one of the first champions of , She helped establish landscape architecture as a profession that combines horticulture, architecture, engineering, and ecology, and elevated its status as an art form that enriches people's lives. She also challenged gender norms and stereotypes by pursuing a career in a male-dominated field and proving that women can excel in any profession they choose.

Let's celebrate Beatrix Farrand's legacy and continue to honor her vision of creating inspiring and sustainable outdoor environments for everyone to enjoy!

We were excited to spot one of our favorite "first signs of spring" this week. Daffodils are a hardy perennial that are deer and rodent resistant showing their sunshine like faces in the late winter year after year. Daffodils are the March birth flower, but the best time to plant their bulbs is in the fall. In an open planting bed they may spread to fill the area, but they're also great in pots or between shrubs.
